My Internship at Laudato Youth Initiative
Laudato Youth Initiative is a global youth-led organization inspired by Pope Francis' encyclical "Laudato Si'", which calls for urgent action to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability. The initiative empowers young people to become proactive stewards of the environment by raising awareness, fostering community engagement, and promoting sustainable practices. Through educational programs, advocacy campaigns, and grassroots initiatives, it aims to inspire a new generation of leaders committed to creating a more just and sustainable world.
During my spring semester at St. Edward’s University, I contemplated how to productively spend my summer break. One thought came to mind: applying for an internship position at the Laudato Youth Initiative. While still at Holy Cross Lake View, I was part of the Laudato Club and was amazed at how little actions can contribute to saving the planet. I discovered that making a difference wasn’t a hard thing to do.
In brainstorming which organization to apply to, I aimed to ensure that my time would create an impact not only on me but also on the community and the world at large. After a meeting with the initiative’s mentor and executive director, where I outlined my goals and expectations of improving my photography and social media management skills, I felt confident about my decision. Having been part of the initiative since high school, I had a good understanding of the team I was to join, a family-oriented team.
My interests in social media management and photography, combined with my interest in project management, found a perfect environment at the Laudato Youth Initiative offices. My skills in digital media marketing, event planning, and environmental advocacy were put to good use when our partner, John Paul II Justice and Peace Centre, won the John Paul II Vatican Foundation Award, the “Premio San Giovanni Paolo II.” Additionally, I was involved in the Thanksgiving Mass at Holy Cross Lake View this June.
I contributed to the initiative’s video posts by developing the introduction and closure video segments. My opinions and ideas about the website during its development in my first weeks of the internship were also considered by the developer.?
Throughout my stay at the initiative’s office, I faced technological challenges, including software usage and understanding photography and media rules. Despite these hurdles, my readiness to learn something new allowed me to overcome them. The experience left me with advanced photography and social media management skills. I learned to operate in my areas of interest with ease, thanks to events like the Premio San Giovanni Paolo II award ceremony. My mentors, such as Executive Director Benard Kahwa, Initiative President Sarah Kirikumwino, and Website Developer Denis K., guided me on how to take the best pictures. Brother Adolf Mugume CSC, the initiative’s mentor, provided invaluable advice on media management.

Interactions with fellow interns, mentors, and community members were pivotal in my internship. The community at Laudato Youth Initiative and John Paul II Justice and Peace Centre felt more like a family than a workplace. Their willingness to know me better was very welcoming, and the connection was both social and professional, ensuring that my stay was productive. During the award-winning ceremony, the center's employees worked hand in hand with me to make the best of the day. The networking opportunities were extensive, involving various religious congregations and their associates.
This internship journey has proven that time management, service provision, trust, and efficiency are key to successfully managing social media, especially for an organization. My experience with the Laudato Youth Initiative demonstrated that more youth involvement could lead to significant achievements in environmental protection. The creative minds of young people can greatly contribute to this cause. This realization left me thinking that environmental protection isn’t a one-person fight; we all have to contribute in our various capacities.
Internships are invaluable for personal and professional development. They provide practical experiences, enhance skills, and offer networking opportunities. I encourage other young individuals to seek similar opportunities, as they can be immensely rewarding.
For those interested in getting involved with Laudato Youth, I encourage you to share your personal gifts and pursue new discoveries through internships. Visit the Laudato Youth Initiative’s social media pages and website for more information on how to contribute.
