My Internship Experience with JPMorgan Chase & Co.
As I look back and reflect on my internship with JP Morgan Chase, I have realized how lucky I am. Overall, I had an amazing experience and learned plenty, but below are a couple of things that really stuck with me.
My first takeaway from the summer was to not be afraid to ask questions. I na?vely went into my internship experience thinking that many people would either completely doubt my abilities or just shun me for being that “stupid intern”. To my surprise so many people were beyond willing to help me or provide resources that could assist. One thing my manager mentioned to me this summer was to first, always attempt to figure something out. However, she would throw in a caveat that if asking a question would save a significant amount of time, then to not be afraid to reach out instead of wasting that time.
I think me being a fairly social person in general helped me to not be afraid to speak up, but additionally helped me to gain the trust of my team members in a very short time frame. I was also able to display that by proving myself as a reliable team member who met deadlines and communicated issues or roadblocks in a timely manner.
Another takeaway from my internship experience was that being highly adaptable and eager to take on any new task goes a long way. Accompanying that with being able to understand new information that you are learning and deliver on things with minimal direction can make you stand out. One of my ultimate goals throughout the summer was to provide value in any way I could, and I realized that a huge way to do so was to make my bosses job as easy as possible, or to at least not make it more difficult.
I would also like to thank my boss Melissa Ginder and her associate Mike Sullivan for making my experience as exceptional as it was. Although I was not in the same office as Mike (he sat it one of our New York Offices), he was always available for any questions that I had, any guidance that I needed and was overall just an amazing person. Melissa’s previous internship experience allowed her to focus on certain things that would be more valuable for me not only throughout the summer, but throughout my entire career. Much of the insight, guidance and hard work she showed will not only stick with me forever, but I truly believe that my experience was made completely different because of her.
My final key takeaway from this internship came with learning how to balance networking while staying on top of my work. I was able to network while properly balancing quite a heavy workload by making good use of my team’s connections, the networking opportunities made available by the JPMC recruiting team and gathering referrals from fellow interns. I also believe that showing genuine interest in learning about other groups and teams within the bank enabled me to meet with and gather information from other people that I may not have otherwise been able to.
Due to being a valuable asset and steady contributor, and what I learned during my experience, I received a returning offer with JPMorgan Chase & Co.
