My Intern Experience at AmeriHealth Caritas

My Intern Experience at AmeriHealth Caritas

In 1983, the Sisters of Mercy created Mercy Health Plan, operating in a Philadelphia hospital with the goal of connecting members to a doctor and improve the healthcare experience for Medicaid members. This small voluntary group has now grown to become one of the leaders in the national Medicaid managed healthcare industry. Now, AmeriHealth Caritas provides solutions for over 5 million financially underserved and physically disabled individuals in over 13 different states across the country. After going through the financial burdens of healthcare for my own healthcare needs, I knew that a company that was adamant about prioritizing the basic needs of the people who needed it the most would be the perfect fit for me.

????????????? As my internship nears its end, I would love to share my experience as a Digital Solutions Intern at AmeriHealth Caritas at the Newtown Square headquarters this summer with y’all.

This summer has been something completely out of the box for me. Having lived close to home for the entirety of my life, these 2 months in Philadelphia has been an amazing learning experience for me as a professional and as a person.

As a Digital Solutions intern, I have been working with our Digital Solutions and Analytics teams to work on a wide variety of tasks utilizing an equally wide variety of skills that I had either already possessed or had to learn as I went through the internship process. Working in a hybrid environment was a novel challenge for me during this time, and I would like to thank my manager Tiffany Dsouza and my Director Sashi Akula in guiding me through the process and helping me feel at home with the Digital team.

Project Work

Without going into too much detail, my primary project revolved around researching Enterprise-Scale Cloud Human Capital Management (HCM) Suites and presenting a list of solutions that best addressed the various pain points of our stakeholders to the team. It was a great experience in participating in stakeholder interviews and learning more about the different people I met with to greater understand their challenges and experiences in their fields to clarify what I needed to develop my list of HCM solutions. I would love to thank Chrissy Patterson for guiding me through some of the various process maps of our stakeholders’ operations to help me understand which of their problems would be relevant to my evaluation.

????????????? Additionally, I am grateful for the opportunity to utilize some of my data analysis and technical skills in SQL and Databricks to be able to analyze inefficiencies in the organization’s costs and contribute to my team’s presentation of system inefficiencies to our stakeholders. I would love to thank Lori Vanaman and Luke Kedziora for guiding me through gaining Databricks access as well as helping me overcome the hurdles I had in retrieving the correct results from my analyses.

The Final Weeks

????????????? In these last couple weeks, I look forward to presenting all of my work to the Digital Team for my final presentation. However, from going to the Phillies game with the other interns to having dinner with my manager, I look forward to enjoying some of the final collaborative experiences I have with the wonderful people I have met during my time here. The positive energy I have learnt from the teams I have worked with is something I hope to carry on towards in my future as a professional.
