My impressions about Microsoft Fabric - Unified Data and Analytics Platform

I believe this next-gen offering will lead to minimization of data movement (and therefore costs to deliver and support) to deliver performant and robust data products.

  • SAASified services
  • One Lake that can be accessed by different compute types.
  • One Lake as One Drive for Data.
  • Open Source Delta Parquet format.
  • Cross Cloud Query – Join tables in AWS with data in Fabric
  • Multiple Compute offerings – Data Engineering, Data Science, Data Warehouse and Real time Analytics
  • Domains -> Workspaces ->Artifacts to assign ownership to the data products.
  • Data hub for the business users to discover their data assets.
  • Power BI can performantly execute directly against One Lake w/o the need to extract, using Direct Lake. So no extract schedules.
  • Shortcuts to access data from other cloud platforms such as AWS storage etc.
  • Enhanced data security and governance.

Presently in preview. As more functionalities (available in Azure, yet to be made available in Fabric) get released to Fabric, this next-gen offering will become even more formidable.?

I am excited and keen to watch the journey of Fabric.
