"My Husband is in a Thai Prison and No One Will Help Us"?

"My Husband is in a Thai Prison and No One Will Help Us"

I recently posted about the situation of Derrick Keller, a U.S. citizen and Navy veteran who has spent the past 10 months in a Thailand jail and faces a possible 30-year sentence for the "crime" of accepting a job acting in a promotional video for a company that turned out to be an international Ponzi scheme.

Thai authorities have spun out a narrative in which Derrick -- an actor who has appeared in numerous "white face" roles in China, where he and his family live -- is somehow the mastermind of the Eagle Gates Group, the U.S.-based firm. Although Derrick and Tanya have produced all the evidence that has been requested of them to demonstrate that Derrick was only a hired actor and had nothing to do with the fraud Eagle Gates is accused of, he remains in jail, and his hearings will begin this week.

I recently interviewed Tanya Keller. Please take some time (the video below runs just under an hour) to hear her tell their story. The U.S. State Department says there's nothing it can do for them. Their senators say there's nothing they can do for them. The U.S. national media has either ignored their story or decided to accept that of the Thai authorities.

This story is about far more than Derrick's guilt or innocence. It's about all the issues few U.S. travelers ever think to consider when traveling to exotic destinations in the developing world:

  • What can I be arrested for in a foreign country?
  • What are my rights when traveling outside the U.S.?
  • What help can I expect from the U.S. State Department if I do get into trouble abroad?

In addition to watching and sharing this video, Derrick's family is interested in learning what, if anything, is being done in the U.S. with regard to Eagles Gate. If anyone has first-hand knowledge about the company or any investigations into it, please private message me.

Thanks in advance for watching and, if you feel so inclined, sharing this interview.
