My Humble Cup of Tea

In these modern times, we have become so mechanical and automatic in our activities that we forget to appreciate what we have. We take things for granted and sometimes even ignore the items that provide us with so much comfort and ease.

If this article changes the perception of even one person, my job is done.

My intention here is not to point out mistakes or complain about anyone’s attitude towards life but to make you aware of how much we are taking for granted, and how this very habit is drawing us away from our own selves.

Here goes... my story of the humble cup of tea.

Every morning, when I wake up at 4:30 AM, I thank God and go on to do my inner work. Then I love to have my early morning cup of tea. It energises me, it gives me comfort, and it makes me feel good.

And here begins my journey of blessings...

My humble cup of tea has three basic ingredients: water, a teabag, and milk (no sugar for me, I am on a diet). Where does the story begin?

It begins with the tea plantations where the owners plant and nurture the tea plants. Think about how many people are involved in taking care of these plants. Then picture those women plucking the tea leaves, maybe a young mother carrying her baby on her back, plucking tea leaves because it’s her livelihood. Then, more people are involved in washing, cleaning, and drying the tea leaves, followed by the hundreds of people involved in sorting and packing the tea leaves. Then again, many more people are involved in transporting these tea packets to various outlets all across the country. The story doesn’t end there. So many people are involved in retailing these tea packets. Finally, our own family members get them from the store to home, and this goes into making my cup of tea.

This is only for tea. Now, I leave it to your imagination to think about how many hundreds of people would be involved in getting milk, water, a tea kettle or dish for boiling water, gas, and the tea cup itself.

The list is endless.

But my point here is, can you see how many thousands of people are involved in getting this humble cup of tea for you to enjoy? How many livelihoods are dependent on your humble cup of tea?

So, can we take just one moment to be grateful for all those thousands of people who are responsible for getting our favourite beverage to the comfort of our homes? Can we bless them for their efforts to make our lives so much easier? Can we silently acknowledge their work in bringing comfort to us?

I feel so overwhelmed and supported to realise that I live in these times and age where everything is delivered to my home. Aren’t we living in the best of times?

And yet, we see people complaining about the little things that go wrong, about everything in life.

Why do we take everything for granted?

What we need in our world now are more people who are grateful for what they have, more people who appreciate the comforts and count their blessings.

Let me know if this resonates with you.
