My hat is off to Google
You must check out google's home page today and click on the link (below). Understanding the history of the disability movement is critical to improving our current situation and empowering this community into the future.
There is A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE in many areas, especially creating equal access to sports (see our Angel City Sports) and employment (current unemployment rate is 2x higher for people with disabilities than the rest of the population).
But most importantly, we need to reduce the stigmas that this community faces. We can all do our part. We can work to reduce our unconscious bias towards people that are different that we are, come from different backgrounds, or simply think differently than we do.
I think this starts by engaging, making new connections and friends, and better understanding their journey, struggles, and goals. We all need to create a new framework for thinking about people who happen to be different from ourselves. Interestingly, one thing that we all have in common is that we are all different. This commonality should be our starting point, not our dividing point.
If you are interested in getting involved to support the beautiful, diverse, and rich community of people with disabilities, please reach out to me.
Join me on this journey to make the world a better, more tolerant, diverse, and inclusive place.
