My growth at Neste: "Innovative mindset surrounds me daily at work."

Kati Sandberg’s increasing responsibility as a Fellow, leading expert of aviation fuels is a result of a long career, enthusiasm to research and continuous training opportunities which have made her as confident as she is today. Kati started her journey at Neste nearly 25 years ago and over the years she has had the chance to experience many types of tasks.?

In 1998, Kati joined Neste as a laboratorian trainee which marked the beginning of a diverse career in various positions. Always ready for new challenges, Kati decided to further her knowledge in chemistry after graduating as a laboratory technician. Therefore, she studied analytical chemistry at the University of Helsinki while working at Neste Research and Development in Porvoo. Her tasks varied from laboratory analyses to pilot operator. “I’m proud of my laboratorian background because it has provided me with strong knowledge of the oil and chemical industry,” states Kati.

In 2005, Kati delved deeper into the field of Neste products, transitioning from a laboratorian into a researcher. However, in 2010 she shifted to the field of aviation fuels which was a jackpot for Kati because at the same time development and standardization of alternative aviation fuels had started in the aviation industry. Her role as researcher expanded to expert before assuming her current position as a Fellow in aviation fuels. Kati finds immense fulfillment in her work, particularly in the development and commercialization of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel?.?

As a Fellow, she participates in standardization of aviation fuel and shares expertise with internal and external projects and stakeholders. Developing cleaner fuels from alternative sources and reducing emissions gives meaning to her work. However, Kati adds, “The role of a fellow involves not only being responsible for project progress but also mentoring and supporting individuals in the team. Helping and supporting each other is the core of this work.”

Trusting the process of learning

Balancing studies and work has always been effortless for Kati at Neste. Moreover, the company’s atmosphere encourages employees to pursue courses, training and continuous learning. Neste organizes both internal and external training programs, emphasizing the importance of updating skills. On the other hand, learning has been reciprocal. Kati’s role as aviation fuel expert also included sharing her knowledge and giving training to others.?

“I have always had the opportunity to pursue further education. I feel that my supervisors have supported me to develop my skills and have been flexible in organizing study leave in the past,” describes Kati.

Kati also feels fortunate that her potential was recognized early in her career, enabling her to simultaneously work and study. She had a study leave for 24 months which was divided into three parts, allowing her to graduate from university and seamlessly continue her tasks at Neste. “The trust between employee and employer is a significant part of an engaging work environment,” Kati asserts.?

A long career with the same employer may evoke different opinions today, but Kati perceives it as an advantage. “I was fascinated by the stability and security of a career at Neste, in addition to my interest in the chemical and the oil industry,” says Kati.

Throughout her journey, diverse workdays and varying tasks have kept Kati motivated. Neste offers both horizontal and vertical career shifts, providing beneficial opportunities for employees. Furthermore, the expansion of refineries in Singapore and Rotterdam have opened up global career prospects and a diverse range of tasks.?

At the moment, Kati is grateful for her core working team of five colleagues, with whom she shares responsibilities. Also, the huge potential of sustainable aviation fuel and global cooperation keep her work interesting. “Cooperation and a good team spirit are vital for successful working days and overall well being for me,” summarizes Kati.

A strong innovation mindset?

Innovation is necessary for Neste's development and competitiveness, but creativity requires time and suitable conditions. Kati’s work is project-based, and she consistently collaborates closely on innovations.

“I believe Neste’s innovation mindset is present and strong due to its long history and the availability of suitable platforms and facilities. Neste provides an environment that nurtures creativity and innovation through cooperation, brainstorming and inspiring concepts. The diverse backgrounds and experiences of employees are seen as richness,” confirms Kati.?

Innovation has been a key element in Neste’s success, and Kati believes it will remain crucial in future. “First and foremost, innovation involves collaboration and innovative thinking, which are essential for development.“

“In recent years, the innovation mindset has expanded further at Neste. Today, innovation is more visible than ever, with new tools available and an increased number of people with a wide range of skills,” Kati continues.

Focusing on charging batteries?

Meaningful jobs often stem from a combination of factors, such as alignment of personal values and interests. “There are two best things about my work: the diverse range of colleagues who have also become my friends along the years, and the opportunity to share my previous experience. I have been able to use my history to assist others,” Kati describes.

For Kati, the challenges or rather the developmental aspects lie in maintaining a healthy work-life balance and establishing boundaries on days off. Balancing the workload and managing different time zones can sometimes be demanding.

“However, resilience and confidence in the results of one's own work help overcome challenges. Additionally, having clear goals motivates me to work even harder on a daily basis.”

“In the future, I envision myself as a mentor and an innovative person who supports colleagues with their careers. I’m excited to see what the next decades hold for sustainable aviation fuel and the entire aviation industry,” shares Kati.

Outside of work, Kati enjoys spending time outdoors with her loved ones. “I can turn off my brain when spending time with my family and friends. My dog also keeps me occupied during my free time. I particularly enjoy gardening or reading a good book.”

Finally, Kati shares an important tip for success: “To unlock your potential, it is important to have self-confidence and faith in yourself, along with curiosity and modesty encountering new things.“
