My Growth Mindset Journal 295
As an elder of the youth, I must acknowledge that my methods of motivating the next generation may have veered off course. In our era, fulfillment often stemmed from the relentless pursuit of personal gain; success was measured by what we could acquire from society. We strived for more possessions, achievements, and recognition, believing these markers defined our worth. Yet, this narrative does not resonate with today’s youth. Young people seek something different. They do not necessarily yearn for material accumulation; they desire to feel valued and recognized within their communities. They thrive on appreciation for their unique contributions, understanding that their impact can be profound, even if it isn't measured in wealth or accolades. It is imperative that we adjust our approach, shifting our focus from external rewards to fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. Instead of motivating our youth with an emphasis on material success, we may acknowledge and celebrate their efforts to connect and contribute. Enhance their self-worth and belonging through encouraging them to participate meaningfully in community life. Promoting the value of appreciation, collaboration, and service may help them realize that their true success lies not in what they can accumulate but in the positive changes they bring to their surroundings. In doing so, we empower them and cultivate a richer, more interconnected community for everyone.
