My Green Desk II

My Green Desk II

I first wrote the My Green Desk article back in April 2021 (available in the Featured Articles), which now seems like a lifetime ago. So much has happened since then, in the world and in my own life, that I thought it would be nice to share a snapshot update of my desk garden, and hopefully encourage others to start their own.

a green desk is a happy desk

Since then, many of us have settled into the home-office lifestyle, while others prefer a hybrid model, with a couple or a few days per week in the office, and some have even returned to company office life completely.

Through this journey, we have found our own space and formula that works best for our type of work and personality.

In my line of work, the most adequate solution seems to be a hybrid model, in which much of the preparation and research is done at home, while the delivery to the client or patient is done at the office in the city.

Regarding the desk and its respective garden, I’m happy to report that both have evolved, the desk was upgraded, now allowing me to work sitting or standing (huge difference) and the garden has grown in number and complexity, from the original few low maintenance succulents (family of the cacti but without the thorns ??), to include three miniature orchids (white, white & yellow, violet), that have significantly added to the esthetic value, as well as a couple of little plants whose names I don’t know, ?counting a total of thirteen specimens happily occupying the whole right-hand side of my desk (as seen in the picture). Of course, on the left-hand side of the desk, we can find a highly dynamic mountain of books, papers, and articles, but we’ll just focus on the garden for now!

The satisfaction (and stress reduction) that it gives to take a few minutes every few days to water them and observe their growth, inevitably reminds me of that funny soft-spoken American artist of the 80s Bob Ross, with his “happy trees” ??, inspiring my own motto “a green desk is a happy desk”.

If you don’t already have one, I highly recommend creating your own Green Desk and experiencing this amazingly simple pleasure. If you do, I would love to see it, feel free to share a picture and inspire someone.
