We are excited to feature Bo Zimmerman! Bo joined the Champion team in 2016 as an accountant. Through his commitment and drive, he has grown to be the Corporate Accounting Manager for our Champion brand.
Can you start by sharing a bit about your background and how you initially joined the company?
I graduated from the University of Kentucky without a clear plan for where I wanted to work. I began my career in the accounting department within the healthcare industry before shifting to a heavy machinery rental company. When I joined Champion in 2016, I didn't have much knowledge or experience in the home improvement industry. But after settling into my role, I quickly grew with the company and knew I was right where I should be.
?
What motivated you to pursue a career within the company?
When I accepted my role at Champion, I was in the process of moving from Chicago to Cincinnati and looking for a long-term role that I could grow in. I grew up in the Cincinnati area, and Champion has been a well-established brand here for a very long time. I was able to move up consistently in my first few years with the company, and it has been so rewarding to grow through change.
?
Can you share a pivotal moment or project that played a significant role in your early career development?
Narrowing it down to one project or moment doesn't tell the whole story. There have been so many opportunities to contribute to the company's success. I always try to take a can-do approach to any challenge, so whenever something comes up, I try to be adaptable and ensure things move in the right direction for continued growth. This has enabled me to grow with the company naturally.
?
How did you navigate challenges during your early career, and what did you employ to overcome them?
Asking questions, learning from those who have done it before, and adapting to change have been pivotal to overcoming challenges. There is always someone who has faced a similar problem. Taking advice and direction with an open mind and not being afraid to fail and learn makes me feel empowered to solve any problem.
?
As you progressed in your career, were there specific skills you worked on to enhance your professional profile?
Communication is key. As I transitioned into management and leadership, ensuring team members are informed on decisions and direction is crucial to achieving team success. I also try to bring passion and enthusiasm. Keeping the energy up even through difficult times helps to drive me through any challenge.
?
Tell us about the transition from your initial role to your new position in a different department. How did you identify this opportunity, and what steps did you take to make the move successfully?
I haven't moved across departments, but the progression from entering the company as a staff-level accountant to growing into a manager happened because of strong leaders believing in me and allowing me to make these jumps. I've always been driven to work hard and do what I can to achieve company goals. Putting in effort, time, and dedication gave me the opportunities, and I’ve been very fortunate to have them.
?
Were there specific mentors or role models who played a significant role in your career advancement? How did they influence your professional development?
There are so many people I could credit for helping coach me and shape me into the professional I am today. When COVID hit in 2020, the business had so much uncertainty and challenge. Most of our leaders were getting pulled into projects, and it was a fantastic time for the entire team to step up. While he is no longer in the company, Justin Hoffman believed in me and empowered me to join management. I wouldn't be where I am today without his influence and belief in me. I also had the unique opportunity to participate in the inaugural Great Day Way Leadership program. Spending three days with other Great Day leaders and learning from Michael Hoy, Mr. Ed, Drew, Pam, and the rest of the executive leadership team gave me so much knowledge I will keep with me for the rest of my career.
?
Looking ahead, what are your future career goals, and how do you plan to continue your professional development within the company?
I want to continue to grow myself while driving growth within the company. I aim to build strong relationships and collaborate with other leaders across all our brands to align our efforts and achieve new heights in the home improvement industry.
Any advice for colleagues or individuals aspiring to advance their careers within the organization?
My advice would be to believe in yourself and don't be afraid to fail while approaching every day with enthusiasm and passion. Win the day, every day.
