My Graduate Internship So Far: Lily-May Edwards

My Graduate Internship So Far: Lily-May Edwards

Lily-May Edwards tells us more about her work as a Digital Content Creator within Careers & Employability, University of Liverpool .

What have you been up to in your day-to-day role?

In my day-to-day role as digital content creator, I am always planning or making digital content of some sort! I spend a lot of time planning content that you will see on Instagram and TikTok, the planning involves brainstorming ideas that could make fun content, and that also means getting to have a scroll on TikTok is actually part of my job as I'm always seeing what's currently trending on there and finding some inspiration!?

Then, regarding making the content, this involves me either spending a lot of time in Canva, making graphics that will be used as Instagram carousel posts, Instagram stories or reel covers as well as spending a lot of time getting out and about, taking photos and filming content and then editing the content. I work with our Career Coaches in the Career Studio every week to film content with them for both Instagram and TikTok. I also have a mini team within the Career Coaches who are my content team who help me to think of some content ideas and also even film some content themselves when I'm not on campus. I'm also always about somewhere on our event days, documenting it and making sure we have plenty of photos and videos of the event!?

So, my role fits into my team as I work in the Communications and Engagement team which focuses on communicating to students important information they need to know regarding Careers & Employability, as well as light touch content that is nice for them and trying to ensure that they engage with whatever we are communicating to them. So for instance, I am communicating to students through Instagram and TikTok and trying to get them engage by liking/commenting/sharing/etc!

What do you enjoy the most about your role?

I would say the best part of my job is definitely getting out and about getting content! I absolutely love going on to campus and having a nice walk around whilst getting nice photos and videos of it. I also love filming with our Career Coaches because they do make it so enjoyable and are always so enthustiastic when filming with me which makes it so much more enjoyable for me! Most of the time, when I'm filming TikTok's or Instagram Reels with the coaches, it really doesn't feel like work because I'm having such a good time!

How have you found the transition from studying to working?

Being completely honest, I did find the transition from studying to working a full-time job really hard. At the beginning, I did find it really difficult to manage my time for all my commitments. It was also quite bitter sweet because I was so excited to start a full-time job and get stuck in to the world of work but then I did experience some post-uni sadness (didn't help as most of my friends are still at uni!), but this sadness is completely normal and everyone experiences it. Now I'm just appreciating the new chapter I'm in, and am so grateful for having such an amazing uni chapter of my life! Now, six months into the job, I do feel completely settled in and feel like I have adapted to the working life and am really loving it!

What has been your favourite experience you have taken part in?

This is a really tough one, as there is SO much I have been involved with so far which I have absolutely loved! I think I would have to say our Employability Day! It was a very chaotic and hectic day for me as I was running here, there and everywhere getting content throughout the whole day, but I loved it! Employability Day was such a fun day as there was so much going on all over campus and I know I would have loved it as a student! I also got the chance on Employability Day to make content not just for @livunicareers but also for @livuni which was great!?

What are you looking forward to the rest of this year?

Something I'm looking forward to this year is something that has just begun, Feel Good February! I love the whole concept of Feel Good February and love how it's something for students, staff and graduates to get involved with! I know we've got a lot of great content planned for this month, it's going to be one busy month and I can't wait to see what I'll be getting up to which all the events going on! But it's lovely to know that I can also get involved with some of the activities going on on campus too!

Have you got any new year’s resolutions?

I do have quite a few New Year's resolutions! I love making New Year's resolutions and love having the perfect opportunity to really work on myself and better myself in some way as the New Year begins! So, my three main resolutions are:

  1. Get into a really good routine with work and all my other commitments outside of work. This is something I do think I have definitely improved already which is great to know! I am quite a busy person, but I like to busy but this resolution is all about making sure I always have time for everything I want to do and involves me being very organised and planning my weeks well!?
  2. I would like to become fitter and healthier. Like many people over December, I very much indulged in my food, but now in 2023, I would like to make healthier food choices! Regarding becoming fitter, something I have recently started to work on this is having PT sessions! I have been thoroughly enjoying the sessions and love having the pressure of someone watching me which pushes me to my max! When it starts to get a little warmer, I would like to start trying to have a daily walk too, to help improve my fitness as well as being really good for my wellbeing.?
  3. I want to focus more on my TikTok. TikTok, as well as being a big part of my job, is actually a big hobby of mine and I love creating content for myself on there! Over the last few months, I have slacked with it, but this is something I really want to work on this year!

It's been 6 months of learning, developing, working in the best team and having so much fun!?
