My Football Club media, marketing and sales experience

Having volunteered and worked for various football clubs over the past five years, here is a quick showcase of my social media management, match reporting, and graphic design work for these clubs.

Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club

For a few matches, I was responsible for producing match reports and match previews published on the Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club's website.

Woking Football Club

As the full-time commercial assistant at Woking Football Club, I helped the commercial department to run smoothly in an administrative, corporate hospitality and marketing capacity. I worked closely with the club's voluntary media team to promote commercial and revenue making opportunities, alongside forging stronger relationships with people across the club and local/national businesses.

I drafted a social media post promoting commercial and revenue making opportunities at the football club before sending these for approval to the media team.

Part of my full-time capacity as commercial assistant at the football club saw me be the friendly and welcoming face as our corporate and patrons guests arrived at the stadium, directing and welcoming them to the hospitality lounge. I was also responsible for setting up the lounge, communicating with the outsourced catering team by informing them of any guests' allergies and dietary requirements, and the matchday media team for any commercial-related announcements to be made over the stadium PA (tannoy), e.g. match sponsor, ball sponsor, birthday mentions, special guests etc.

Setting up the hospitality lounge on a matchday. I was able to develop my customer service skills in a vibrant and fast pace sports environment.
On a regular basis, I drafted and sent out an email newsletter to our commercial contacts and patrons using email newsletter software, MailChimp.
Another part of my job role at Woking FC was running the club shop on weekdays and making sure it was appropriately stocked and organised for a matchday.

With full-time staffing low and the reliance on a volunteer workforce at non-league football, another responsibility I took on was running the club shop on weekdays, serving customers who came throughout the week looking to buy merchandise or replica shirts; I enjoyed getting to know fans. I also made sure the shop was stocked for a matchday.

During my time at the football club I enjoyed developing relationships with our existing sponsors, displaying my clear ability to upsell, passion for sport and fulfil sales targets by finding match sponsors at short notice.

I attended a B2B exhibition, namely Woking Means Business, and my photo (alongside my line manager) was printed in the local newspaper, the Woking News & Mail.

I represented the football club at a local B2B networking exhibition, building connections and contacts with both local and national companies. This developed the club's commercial function and relationships within the business community.

Ahead of representing the football club at the B2B exhibition Woking Means Business, I was tasked by my line manager to produce an attention-grabbing leaflet or poster before printing multiple copies and handing this marketing collateral to prospective commercial prospects. After returning from Woking Means Business, I developed relationships with these prospective contacts, including those whose business cards I was given after having the confidence to go around and speak to all the stallholders and event attendees.

A poster or printed marketing collateral I designed and printed for Woking FC to represent the football club at Woking Means Business, promoting the commercial opportunities at the club to prospective clients.

I am proud to have worked full-time at a football club and show my natural ability to adapt and be creative: "Morgan was highly professional, committed and eager to support all aspects of the football club. He would actively seek fresh ideas on how to improve or enhance match day experience on a variety of levels. The fan experience was always an important factor in Morgan’s view and one he was keen to highlight during his time at the club. Morgan’s determination didn’t stop there as he helped to improve the commercial attraction of the football club within the local town. Talking and negotiating with local and national companies to come on board with their local club. Morgan would be a great asset to any business and will not only rise but exceed any expectations given."

One of the club's sponsors also has left the following recommendation for me via LinkedIn: "Always helpful, always smiling. Nothing was too much to ask md Morgan always had time to chat despite looking after 100 plus people on match days. Hard working and reliable."

Badshot Lea Football Club

I volunteered for Badshot Lea Football Club while I was in full-time employment. I was responsible for updating the club's website, drafting match reports, posting live in-match updates to the club's Twitter feed, proactively creating content across web and social media, taking photographs during matches, and editing copy for the matchday programme. I also had a commercial focus, looking to attract sponsors. Below are some examples of my work for the non-league club.

Social media graphic design for Badshot Lea FC, posting this graphic as part of a pre-match social media post announcing the team's lineup.
I designed this social media graphic using Canva promoting the release of the 2022/23 season's fixtures. The fixtures graphic had to be easy to make quick edits to due to the nature that sports events and matches can clash or change at short notice.

A photo I took and published on the Badshot Lea social media accounts during the match, capturing real emotion in a photograph. The graphic I designed reflects the club's away/alternative kit colours so the graphics I designed proved to be versatile.

Sheerwater Football Club

During my time as Media Manager for Sheerwater Football Club, I was trusted with running the clubs social media accounts, writing match reports and conducting video interviews. I regularly reviewed the social media pages and creating content that would encourage debate, be engaging and mutually grow our relationships with other clubs and leagues at a similar level.

Over this 28 day period, the Twitter page alone saw an impressive 88,000 profile visits, a steady increase in followers and a staggering 159% increase in tweet impressions, totalling 404k. My social media content output was consistent both in quality and quantity; see comparison with the previous month summary.

Below is a video that I edited after interviewing a player during a post-match interview for the club's YouTube channel. On reflection, I would have improved the sound quality of speech, and subsequently I invested in a microphone due to windy conditions.

The matchday programmes I designed, with my own photographs. It was positive to oversee an end to end product delivery for the matchday programme, including liaising with a professional print company to source a competitive quote & organise delivery.

I worked closely with key club stakeholders to launch a set of social media posts focused around World Mental Health Day, a key awareness day that impacts many peoples' lives:

A testimonial about my work from the Sheerwater FC chairman at the time Ollie: "Morgan was a fantastic addition to our Volunteer team at Sheerwater FC. He brought a professionalism to our social media and PR presence as well as revolutionising our Match Day programs. Morgan also offered to help on many further aspects of running the football club and he certainly showed how much of a passionate individual he is. I would absolutely recommend Morgan for any social media, graphic design, PR work. Not only this, but I would also recommend him as the perfect individual for any employer looking for a new team member."

Traco Athletic Football Club

Traco Athletic FC were an amateur Saturday League team I volunteered for across 3 years on the weekends while I was still in full-time education at sixth form college during my A-Levels. I enjoyed writing match reports, updating the website, developing my experiences in sports photography, getting to know players and helping recruit players. I worked closely with the team manager and assistant manager as well as the team captain.

With each experience, volunteering was as rewarding as the paid employment at Woking Football Club. I have thoroughly enjoyed my roles in football and above all, enjoy a passion in your spare time surrounded with good people. I have met so many great people along the way, and some interesting characters that would set off fireworks if they walked into a room!
