My First TEDx: How To Overcome Initial Challenges ????

I'm excited to share a new chapter in my professional journey—preparing for my first TEDx talk. ?? Despite my extensive public speaking experience, this opportunity has been both challenging and enlightening. In this article, I'll take you through my journey, challenges, and valuable lessons I learned along the way. ??

The Idea

In May 2023, my publisher suggested doing a TEDx talk to promote my book, "Business as Unusual: How to Thrive in the New Renaissance." ?? Whilst initially excited, I soon realised that a TEDx talk is about sharing ideas worth spreading, and you can’t promote a book or sell anything. ??

Finding the Right Event?

The first challenge was finding a suitable TEDx event. I eventually found TEDxRizalStreet in the Philippines through Facebook, which felt like the right fit for me. ????

Preparing the Talk

Drafting the talk was a struggle; I had to figure out what to say without focusing on my book. With the help of my coach and accountability group, I developed a story arc structure and cut down my content to fit the 15-minute limit. ??

Overcoming Challenges

Learning to memorise the speech was a significant hurdle. ?? I recorded myself and listened to the recording multiple times daily, refining the speech to make it sound natural. Perseverance was key, and breaking down the task into manageable chunks helped me push through. ??

Lessons Learned

1. Stop procrastinating and just do it. ?
2. Listen to your heart and choose the direction that feels right for you. ??
3. Practice out loud to ensure the words flow naturally. ???
4. Keep it simple. ??
5. Break down seemingly impossible tasks into manageable chunks. ??
6. Perseverance is key. Keep pushing even when it feels impossible. ??

Looking Ahead

With less than a month to go, I'm feeling more confident. I can recite any part of my talk off the cuff and finish within the time limit. This experience has reminded me that even daunting tasks are achievable, and if I can tackle this challenge, I can handle whatever comes my way in the future. ??
