My First reInvent with Amazon Web Services! What to do/bring!

My First reInvent! What to Bring!

I am so excited as this will be my first reInvent ever! As I am preparing to head out to Vegas, here’s my must pack list. For those of you who’ve been there before, what did I miss?

Mobile power

Nothing will hurt your flow of creativity and growth more than having your phone run out of batteries mid-day. Bring a backup battery pack or two (so that you’re not that person standing in the bathroom waiting for your phone to charge), and then a wall charger as a Plan B.

A little unbooked time on the schedule

One of the amazing experiences brought to you by reInvent is the opportunity to network! Think of it as a giant, Cloud, Community of Practice! You’ll meet other companies, learn about new products and inherently wish you hadn’t booked yourself solid! Leave a little extra time for the unknown networking, product and social opportunities you have yet to discover!

 An Open Mind

Let’s face it, last year we launched amazing products that pushed the envelope of innovation. From Snowmobile to the announcement of our new instance families, expect a week full of new offerings, services and technology that will continue to push the edge of cloud technology. Come ready with questions, feedback and anticipation!

 Business cards

Have these ready to swap with other interesting people and forgo the awkward email, phone number, LinkedIn, Instagram account swap. With so many social networks, it’s quicker and easier to swap business cards with all of your social media handles listed, than try and find each other on each site.

Dancing shoes & Comfy shoes. REALLY comfy shoes

Vegas is so big you will want your best walking shoes, and then for the party of the year on Thursday night, you must have your best dancing shoes on!

Chap stick

This one might seem like a random addition, but with the dry air, your lips will be needing some absorption.

Refillable water bottle.

Between the free beer and cocktails at parties and all the walking you’ll be doing, you’ll get thirsty.

Healthy snacks.

To counter balance no food, or the boxed lunches, bring a few granola bars and bags of snacks. You won’t regret it!

 A sense of learning.

There will be so many new announcements and concepts to learn, make sure you are taking advantage of all the amazing opportunities!  I'd love for you to sign up as well for our new Diversity at reInvent.

I’ll be speaking on Thursday from 11:30-12:30 in the MGM grand on the EC2 Enterprise Workloads State of the Union – and how to Innovate!

I hope to see you there!

Super tips. I'd add “plan clothing in layers” as the temperature can change radically indoors/outdoors, one hotel to another, one conference room to another, and day to night. Vegas especially tricky: aircon blast one minute then hot dry air. Enjoy!

Thanks for this great primer Sandy, it will be my first Re:invent as well! I'd love to chat with you more about an interesting discussion from our Women in Tech Summit this week regarding diversity and inclusion, especially after a conversation with Hugh Forrest. Also a special thank you to your colleagues at AWS for their unwavering support of me, our company, and our PostgreSQL community including Mark Porter, Yoav Eilat, Sai Reddy Thangirala, Jignesh Shah, as well as the technical expertise of Grant McAlister and Darin Briskman and finally user community builders Ryan Merket, Jeff Pratt and Sunny Nelson ??. For such an incredibly large company, the dedication and professionalism of these folks every day is astounding! See you in Vegas!

Great Advice Sandy! I'd also recommend downloading a Card Scanning App to manages all those Business Cards!! I use CamCard and it's excellent. All the best with the Keynote.
