Today was my first day being able to experience life in a hospital as an observer! I am ecstatic to have gained the opportunity to be a medicine observer at Mercy Personal Physicians at Reisterstown
Already on my first day, I have acquired a wealth of new knowledge. I am observing Doctor Veronica Epstein , and I’m also working with her assistant. I got the opportunity to take vitals, and I interacted with a variety of patients.
Despite spending only a few hours in the hospital, I had an incredible time nonetheless, constantly reminding myself that I am in fact in a hospital interacting with real doctors and their patients facing real-world issues!
I had a smile on my face the entire time, knowing that I'm learning so many amazing things. I was able to call the patients in and walk them to the medical room. Dr. Epstein would then ask the patients for permission if they were okay with me being in the room while she diagnosed them. As I listened to the questions and concerns of various patients, I was able to observe how Dr. Epstein interacted with them and how she diagnosed them.
I then had to get the medication for an injection for one of the patients and watched how Dr. Epstein’s assistant prepared to give the vaccination to the patient. Initially, she handed me a Band-Aid, and I started to panic, thinking she wanted me to administer the vaccine :-). But of course, she just wanted me to open the Band-Aid and be ready for any unforeseen incidents!
It was even more incredible that I was able to record Dr. Epstein's and a patient's blood pressure using a stethoscope! I actually had that stethoscope around my neck the entire day, and that was an amazing feeling by itself.
I can’t wait to go back and continue to learn more fascinating things about medicine. I am speechless at having been granted this opportunity; for that, I will be eternally grateful. I am moving closer to fulfilling my dream of pursuing a medical career!!
