The First Question I Ask All My Clients About Their Big Idea

A successful TEDx can be life-changing. But before you can find success in the TEDx arena, you have to have a Big Idea, and that idea needs to be worth sharing.?

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a hundred ideas racing around in your head at any moment of the day. The challenge isn’t coming up with an idea… It's narrowing it down! With so many possibilities, it can be difficult to tell which ideas have potential and which to leave behind.?

I see this happen to so many of my clients, and after years of helping people develop their Big Ideas, I’ve found that one simple question can help people find clarity:?

What can you not shut up about??

Seriously.?

Pretend we’re at dinner. You’ve got 20 minutes with me to talk about whatever you want. What do you talk about??

I’ve heard just about every answer in the world to this question. I’ve had clients tell me about organizing, rock climbing, musicals… and every one of them was eventually able to connect their favorite topic to the profound differences it has made in their lives.?

Don’t just choose your idea because you think it will sell, really reflect on what has improved your business, your relationships, your life. Reflect on what gets you excited, what energizes you, what you would corner someone at a dinner party to talk about.?

Now that is an idea worth sharing!?

Speaker Highlight: Robbie Samuels, inclusive networking expert

We all know what it’s like to feel out of place or excluded. As a transgender man, Robbie knows all to well what it feels like to wonder whether he fits in or belongs. Observing the dynamics of groups, he noticed that small changes in body language can lead to outsiders feeling welcomed - or pushed aside. To share this idea, he created “croissants vs. bagels,” a simple concept to help anyone take action to make their business, school, or community more welcoming. In his talk, he shares this sticky concept and explains how simple, small gestures can mean all the difference for anyone who has ever felt a little bit like an outsider - which is all of us.?

Robbie Samuels is the author of Croissants vs. Bagels: Strategic, Effective, and Inclusive Networking at Conferences . His new book, Small List, Big Results , focuses on aiding entrepreneurs in launching a new offer successfully, no matter the size of their email list.

If you have a Big Idea brewing, don’t wait to share it! You can book a time to talk with me here. ?

It's true. For a long time croissants and bagels was something I could not stop talking about. It came up the first time I talked to the woman who later became my wife. LOL
