My first navigational skills ?

My first navigational skills ?

Somewhere in the late sixties, around 1967/68.  I was 6 years old and just on a sunny and humid day, my mother said to me:

  • If you you hear a lot of unknown horrible, scary and screaming noises around the house, area or else, and you can't find me, your father, your sister or other known people,

do immediately as follows:

  1. get as soon as possible to the swimmingpool area (view map, location A),
  2. from there you walk to the main street, go right and follow this street on the right hand side for a long time until the road stops,
  3. go right on the smaller road, and walk until you see the airport and go inside (view map, location B)!
  4. There will be lots of people overthere to help you and get out of the country and travel to Europe.

And thats it. Fortunally, I never had to follow her advise and at the end of 1969 we all arrived from the problematic Biafran civil war area in Nigeria, safe in Europe!

Much later I had a look at Google Maps for the earlier mentioned directions. Hardly anything had changed, and so at that time my first potential navigational abilities and skills were never recognized nor used but remembered as a priceless experience!

Nice one Peter!! I was super excited to know that you were talking about my great country Nigeria. As a nation we are really embracing the science of location called Geography.

Your parents had to educate you to adapt your daily skills to an unusual situation and they managed, and you managed, at 6 years old! An impressive example of how adaptive or creative are people, afterall.
