My first month at Advanced Precision Technologies…completed it mate

After 12 years at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains, I decided earlier this year to take the leap into self-employment.

I loved my time at Mercedes, being part of a world-class team, winning eight consecutive F1 Constructors’ World Championships, seven F1 Drivers' World Championships and two consecutive Formula E titles. I even got to make parts for a hypercar and a battery powered car with a 1000km range.

Arguably, more important than those incredible career highlights, I also got to work with the best of the best. I worked with people who, like me, felt passionate about engineering and accuracy, manufacturing parts to the tightest of tolerances and always pushing for improvements and efficiency under increasingly short deadlines - an arms race off the track as much as on it!

It was during my time at Mercedes that I met Thomas White . And for 11 of my 12 years at Mercedes, we worked together in similar roles in a partnership that just worked.

When I started seriously thinking about fulfilling a life-long dream and setting up my own business, I got talking to Tom who had set up Advanced Precision Technologies a year earlier. The more we talked, the more realised we had similar ambitions and, having worked so well together before, decided we should join forces and run a business together.

Once the details were ironed out and I had worked my notice at Mercedes, I joined Advanced Precision Technologies at the end of August.

In the last month, we have produced parts for a wide range of applications including motorsport and cycling. We’ve also invested in setting up some new secure, IT infrastructure and received our fantastic, branded workwear which has certainly got us noticed on social media and meetings we have gone to! This follows the company’s recent investment in a DMG CMX70 machine and OPEN MIND hyperMILL with virtual machine software.

Our journey to achieving our ISO9001 and ISO14001 accreditation has also begun and we are actively looking to enhance our inspection capabilities.

Personally, I’ve also been genuinely pleased by the support we have received since I announced that I was joining Advanced Precision Technologies. I spent so much of my first week replying to LinkedIn messages from people I knew from the engineering industry reaching out to wish us well or offer to put some work our way.

The last month has gone by in a bit of a blur and I’m told this is the norm when you run your own business, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m incredibly excited for the future and some of the projects we have lined up to support.
