My First Hackathon as a VC – Key Takeaways and Insights

This week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend my first hackathon as a venture capitalist. It was an eye-opening experience that provided valuable insights into the vibrant world of innovation and the immense potential of diverse talent. I am excited to share some of these takeaways and insights with you, and I will be diving deeper into these topics next week in our video interview for our newsletter, OGs and LPs, with Wayne Sutton , Community Manager at Convex . Wayne will be dropping some incredible knowledge for black founders, so stay tuned! But for now, here are a few reflections from my hackathon experience.

The Energy and Creativity Were Palpable ??

Walking into the hackathon, the first thing that struck me was the sheer energy and creativity in the room. Teams of passionate individuals were collaborating intensely, bouncing ideas off each other, and rapidly prototyping their concepts. It was a dynamic environment where innovation was not just encouraged but celebrated. As a VC, witnessing this level of enthusiasm and creativity reaffirmed my belief in the power of hackathons to drive meaningful innovation.

The Importance of Diverse Perspectives ??

One of the most inspiring aspects of the hackathon was the diversity of the participants. People from various backgrounds, disciplines, and cultures came together to tackle complex problems. This diversity of thought led to more innovative solutions and highlighted the importance of inclusive teams. For black founders and other underrepresented groups, hackathons provide a platform to showcase their unique perspectives and talents, which are often overlooked in traditional settings.

Rapid Prototyping and Agile Development ??

Hackathons are a crash course in rapid prototyping and agile development. Teams are given a limited amount of time to develop a functional prototype, which forces them to focus on the essentials and iterate quickly. This approach aligns closely with the lean startup methodology, which emphasizes building a minimum viable product (MVP) and continuously improving it based on feedback. As a VC, seeing this process in action was a powerful reminder of the importance of agility and adaptability in the startup ecosystem.

Mentorship and Collaboration ??

The role of mentors at the hackathon was crucial. Experienced professionals provided guidance, feedback, and support to the teams, helping them refine their ideas and overcome challenges. This mentorship not only enhanced the quality of the projects but also provided valuable learning experiences for the participants. As we continue to support black founders, the value of mentorship and collaboration cannot be overstated. It's a vital component of building successful and sustainable ventures.

The Power of Community and Networking ??

Hackathons are more than just a competition; they are a community-building exercise. Participants had the chance to network with peers, mentors, and potential investors, creating lasting connections that could help them in their entrepreneurial journeys. For black founders, these networks are especially important as they navigate an industry where access to resources and opportunities can be limited. Building a strong, supportive community is essential for fostering innovation and growth.
