Ive had my Oculus GO for a little over 4 days and i can honestly say it feels like a game changer!
Even though I am a self confessed tech geek and pretty handy with tech I did worry about how I would get on with my first VR headset. First impressions were very goo and I was presented with a very sturdy quality well endorsed box. It displayed and 'promised' good things with the presence of Discovery VR, Jurassic World and even Netflix logos on the box. As the Oculus Go has been developed and manufactured by Facebook it also boasts 1000+ apps, games and movies ready and waiting at my fingertips.
The unit sat perfectly in the box and came with a glasses extender, pointer controller and cleaning microfibre cloth. There are also native iOS and Android apps that other additional set up functionality and are free to download and the pairing was effortless! The app also allowed you to select 'I don't have an Oculus Go yet' and provided you with tutorials, tips and video reviews before you decide to take the dive. There is also the option to screen cast your VR experience to another device such as an iPhone or iPad if you are helping a new user to find their way around the navigation.
I took the Oculus Go out of the box and hit the power button which sits visible on the top of the unit along with the volume button which a super accessible. There was no need to boot up and PC's, connect annoying cables or even charge it up and within 20 seconds I was face deep in VR for the masses. There were a few questions around 'accounts' however I opted to use my existing Facebook account to create my Oculus VR account. The important thing to remember here is that this head set connect to a WIFI meaning it has access to streaming content rather than store it which makes the experience even more flexible.
You haven't seen it until you've seen it in VR. "Facebook"
The Oculus Go effortlessly glided into a good VR experience and within a few minutes I was navigating menus easily with the hand held controller and exploring the VR world. At this point I can only describe the Oculus Go as breathtaking and had to keep reminding myself that it was £179 (Special offer usually £199). I truly believe that this VR headset has set a new baseline and experience that others will struggle to follow. It delivers a new age of VR to first timers and due to it portability it slots into the void where wired headsets cannot go such as a delayed national express train!
I have been lucky enough to experience the Oculus Rift in all it's glory within my role as on the of the big four and could see the evolution. The Oculus Go is by no means the replacement for the Oculus Go however it does put VR in the hands of the consumer and open the market up to smaller developers to practice with the Oculus Free Developer platform. The Oculus go design reflects the same premium experience as it's bigger older brother the Oculus Rift and even has the same crystal clean lenses.
One of my favourite feature of the Oculus Go is it's fully integrated speakers they are invisible! It took me a few moments to work out where they were as they are cleverly hidden in the strap and delivery sound without the need to head earphones. This obviously does compromise the sound however it's amicable and the clever bods at Facebook has left you a 3.5mm Aux jack just to finish the job. There is also the option to pair with your wireless headset e.g. Airpods or external speaker system.
The video playback in my opinion was more than adequate for the price point lets not forget you are getting a game changer gadget for a bargain. There are more and more apps being added daily and plenty of free apps to get you started as well as premium subscription apps which I will review over the coming weeks.
Overall the Oculus Go is a high quality premium headset with good optics and the experience is amazing. It also is a fraction of the cost of it's nearest competitors and I would highly recommend buying one.

5 年I read something about the Oculus Go last week and was tempted. Now I've read your article and I'm more tempted... My only question is whether it works comfortably with glasses. I've had trouble with headsets before but they seem to have planned for it with this. What do you think, following your experience?
