This is my first article on the way to becoming an official Management 3.0 practitioner! - Moving Motivators

Hi everyone! This is my first article on the way to becoming an official Management 3.0 practitioner! I’ve started my journey in 2022 and now it’s time to get more serious with it!

Motivation is, or should be, one of the main concerns when we talk about management, motivated teams and individuals are far happier and are able to work more efficiently while resolving conflicts. But how can we keep our teams motivated? A fast and straightforward answer to this question is by creating an environment where they can be intrinsically motivated, either by allowing them to work with tasks that align with what motivates them or creating and maintaining a work system capable of stimulating this kind of behavior.

The first step to that is to both know and understand what motivates the people in our team, one way we can do this is by playing moving motivators! This game is designed to help everyone understand what motivates each one in the work environment, for this one, we have the CHAMPFROGS cards, those are: Curiosity, Honor, Acceptance, Mastery, Power, Freedom, Relatedness, Order, Goal and Status. The idea behind the game is to everyone in the team to define the hierarchy of their intrinsic motivators, placing the ones that motivates them the most on the left and the least on the right. After that is it quite interesting for the person explain the top and bottom 3 motivators. In this way, we are setting the stage to create a great work system.

I’ve decided to use this practice to start off with a new team, I’ve just arrived as a Scrum Master/Product Owner and wanted to connect with them, and getting to know what motivates them while presenting what motivates me seemed like a good start.

After a team building using Personal Maps (I’ll have a post dedicated to this one as well) I explained the idea behind the Moving Motivators and what each letter means, I also explained that we do not need to stick 100% to the definition. I gave them 10 minutes to order their motivators using a Miro template and then I’ve presented mine within 3 minutes and gave the same time to everyone so they could do the same. Every 6 months we replay the game to see how our motivation changes.

I learnt that people are motivated by a variety of things and that the CHAMPFROGS are quite flexible, as they used the cards putting their own understanding of each card. Keeping the cards in the Miro board allowed me to onboard new members by presenting the game of the people who were already in the team while playing with the new members. It was quite interesting to see how their motivation changed after 6 months considering their life/work moment.

I’ll post a picture of our Miro board to illustrate our game!?#management?#motivation?#management30
