My first 9 months as an independent surveyor

CSTDB PCA Independent Damp & Timber Surveyor | 2 X Industry Award Winner
As I sit down to reflect on my journey as an independent damp and timber surveyor, I can't help but be filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude.
It's been nine months since I embarked on this challenging yet incredibly rewarding path, and it has been a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows. But one thing is for sure, it's an experience I would never change.
Nine months ago, I boldly decided to break away from the security of a steady job and venture into the world of independent surveying. It was a decision that filled me with both excitement and trepidation. I had spent years working for established surveying firms, gaining invaluable experience, and honing my skills. But deep down, I wanted something more – the freedom to run my own business and make decisions that aligned with my vision.
One of the immediate highs of becoming an independent damp and timber surveyor was the newfound freedom and flexibility. No longer bound by rigid structures, I could set my schedule and choose the projects that resonated with me. This allowed me to strike a better work-life balance and spend more time with my family, something I had longed for. Furthermore, I find immense satisfaction in offering tailored solutions to my clients.
Every property presents a new and unique challenge, and I relished the opportunity to apply my expertise to find the best solutions. This has enhanced my professional growth and strengthened my reputation in the field.
Another high in this journey has been the opportunity to build stronger client relationships. As an independent surveyor, I have the privilege of working closely with homeowners and property buyers. This allows me to establish trust and provide personalised guidance, ensuring that my clients feel confident in their property-related decisions. The sense of fulfilment derived from helping people protect their investments is immeasurable.
Another incredible moment was receiving my second Property Care Association award for Outstanding Customer Service (highly commended). An award that I didn't expect to win after only a few months of being an independent surveyor, but an incredibly proud night.

Of course, this journey has not been without its share of challenges. The transition from a salaried employee to an independent surveyor came with financial uncertainties and a steep learning curve in managing a business. Marketing my services, handling administrative tasks, and dealing with the occasional slow month have tested my resilience. I also faced the responsibility of building my reputation from scratch. While my experience provided a solid foundation, I had to work diligently to establish myself as a trusted and reliable independent surveyor. It took time and effort, but the journey was worth every minute.
My journey into the world of independent damp and timber surveying was not just a personal endeavour but also a result of the guidance and inspiration I received from a good friend, Neil Marsden Snr . Neil, an experienced surveyor himself, played a pivotal role in my decision to take this path. Little did I know that an unexpected aspect of my journey would be the friendship between us.
Neil had been a tutor of mine during my training at the Property Care Association (PCA), and his passion for surveying was contagious. His wealth of knowledge and experience was something I greatly admired. It was during a casual conversation about my plans that Neil planted the seed of independence in my mind. He shared his journey from working in established firms to becoming an independent surveyor and how it had transformed his career and life.
Neil's encouragement and insights were invaluable to me. He patiently answered my questions, provided guidance on starting my venture, and shared his triumphs and challenges. His unwavering support gave me the confidence to take the leap into independence by working alongside him, knowing that I had a trusted friend to turn to when I faced uncertainties.
As we continue to navigate the challenges and triumphs of independent surveying, I am excited about the future. With Neil by my side as both a mentor and a friend, I am confident that I can face any obstacle and achieve my goals.
Today, as I reflect on my nine-month journey as an independent surveyor, I am grateful not only for the freedom and satisfaction this path has brought me but also for the wonderful friendship that has come about with Neil. Our shared passion for surveying has not only strengthened my professional abilities but has also enriched my life in a way I couldn't have predicted.
Over the past few months, I've also had the privilege of meeting other well-respected surveyors during training days and conferences like Sam Piplica Adrian Dawson Olympic Construction Ltd Gavin White and Oscar Cryan again someone who has become a good friend over the last few months. I've probably spent too many hours looking at LinkedIn and getting insights from other surveyors. Posts from not only the people above but also other surveyors are a great way to learn new information and technology that's about and generally connect with like-minded people.
The decision to take this leap of faith has been transformative, and I look forward to the adventures that lie ahead as I continue to learn more and write my story as an independent damp and timber surveyor.

1 年Lovely post Adam Wallis CSTDB. I love seeing surveyors venture out on their own. It’s not easy and requires a lot of energy, motivation and the ability to learn fast and wear many hats. To receive an award so early on is testament to how well you have made the transition. Good on you! ??????
