My Favorite Reads of 2023
'tis the season for reflection on a year of books read (and listened to - with two little boys and a lunatic dog at home, hands aren’t often free). All links below will direct to an independent bookstore that I encourage you to support if interested in purchasing.
Selling the Cloud made my list two years ago, and this next book by some of the same authors just came out a few weeks ago. Great look into how data and AI impact the modern B2B sales approach, with practical advice (I used their ICP framework when starting my new role this month).
Recommended to me by 2X CEO Dom Colasante and CRO Ryan Heinig , I found this approach to account-based sales & marketing both refreshing (especially compared to some of the BS I see on LinkedIn and elsewhere) and relevant. This book makes a great pairing with Data & Diagnosis-Driven Selling for any B2B sales, marketing, or strategy leader.
Discovered this one via an interview with the author on one of my favorite podcasts, Barry Ritholtz 's Masters In Business. Barry always uses the word fascinating to describe his conversations (which often are, indeed, fascinating) - so I will, too. This book was a fascinating window into how executives at some of the world’s largest companies handled the early innings of the pandemic.
Switch by Dan Heath & Chip Heath
Recommended to me by Nick Ashburn this summer, I found Switch to be a revealing look into how and why humans make (or resist) changes. Following the framework of the elephant, the rider, and the path has helped me both professionally and personally.
I’ve always been into history, specifically Pennsylvania history and corporate America history, and always meant to learn more about story of Bethlehem Steel. Finally did it this year, via this book that details the lives of those impacted by its rise and fall. Especially relevant right now given US Steel’s sale this week.
In full transparency, I didn’t read this entire book, but supported a program this year that involved two of its characters, so skimmed those chapters. Interesting look into the details of the finance world.
And finally, the 2023 Tecce Boys Book of the Year goes to...Oh, the Thinks You Can Think by Dr. Seuss
I read this book approximately 157 times this year.
