My Favorite Reads of 2022

'tis the season for reflection on a year of books read (and listened to - we had our 2nd kid this year, so hands weren't often free but ears certainly were). All links below will direct to an independent bookstore that I encourage you to support if interested in purchasing.

Sell Without Selling Out by Andy Paul

If you're not already listening to Andy's podcast, you should be. His latest book dives into how Connection, Curiosity, Understanding, and Generosity form the pillars for a successful business relationship formed without "selling out" to sales tactics and tropes of old.

Rise of the Data Cloud by Frank Slootman & Stephen Hamm

Meant to get to this in 2021, but came around to finishing it in the last days of 2022. A fascinating look into Snowflake's incredible journey from a single room in San Mateo to the biggest software IPO in history.

The Courage to be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi

While this book has an odd format (a conversation between a man and an adolescent), its lessons in Adlerian psychology make it worthwhile. "Do Not Live to Satisfy the Expectations of Others" is the perfect summary of them.

Never Split The Difference by Christopher Voss

I kick myself every day for not reading this sooner. A classic in negotiation and business that made a huge impact on my day-to-day immediately.

Rizzo by S.A. Paolantonio

In an era of increasingly divisive political discourse, I felt the need to get a full understanding of the most divisive political figure in recent Philadelphia history, former mayor Frank Rizzo. This biography was published in 1993 but reflects on a number of core issues that the city and its people still face today.

The Happiest Toddler on the Block by Harvey Karp, MD, FAAP

I probably should have started reading books like this earlier than 2.5 years and 2 kids into parenthood, but better late than never. Easy read full of practical advice that has already paid off in the Tecce household.

The Mouse Who Played Football by Brian Westbrook

I had to include one children's book on here, due primarily to my soft spot for former Philadelphia Eagles and Villanova Wildcats star running back Brian Westbrook. Overcoming the judgement of "tough little fella, but I'm not sure he has what it takes" from others is a great lesson.

John I love that picture! Thanks for including Sell Without Selling Out on your recommended list. (If I do my podcast long enough, maybe we can have a 3 generation Tecce episode!)

Inspiring and beautiful!
