My Favorite New Year’s Traditions (and Two New Traditions to Start!)
Whether you’re planning to spend New Year’s Eve out on the town or at home and in bed before midnight, the end of one year and the start of the next is an occasion worthy of reflection.
I love traditions and rituals that mark the seasons and transitions between the old and the new. A new year is one of my favorite opportunities to stop and look at where I’ve been and where I’m going. (The fact that my birthday falls at this time of year is pure coincidence. ??)
Here are three New Year traditions from around the world:
In the Philippines there’s a tradition of eating round fruits to celebrate the new year – 12 round fruits in fact, one for every month of the year to come.
In parts of Scandinavia and Germany it’s traditional to eat fish in the new year – because fish only swim forward, not back.
There’s a tradition in Mexico to open the door at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve and sweep out the old – welcoming in the new year and good luck for your 2023 adventures!
Here are two suggestions to get altitude on your life and career as we leave 2022 behind:
- Capture your learning from 2022 by walking through your calendar, recalling and if you like, writing about what you worked on, worked toward, accomplished, learned and surmounted in 2022.
- Write a letter to yourself, to be opened one year from now as 2023 comes to a close. Write about your vision for yourself one year from now. Committing your vision on paper is the first step in making it real!

2 å¹´I love the idea of writing a letter to yourself. It made me remember, Future Me, https://www.futureme.org/user/letters. Future Me allows you to write a letter to yourself, and you select a date in the future when you want to receive the letter. They can be scheduled for anywhere from 6 months to 1, 3, 5, or 10 years or you can set them for your birthday. You can also make them public or keep them private. Mine are private, but I did read a few that were public. I went back in and read the letters I had written to me. Very interesting to see where my thoughts were and what goals I was aspiring to at those times in my life. The first one I sent to Future me was written in 2011 ?? . So thank you for the reminder, I will be writing a new letter to myself this year. Filled with my thoughts and aspirations for my future. Thanks, Liz:)
