My Favorite Holiday

My Favorite Holiday

I think I say this every year but I’m going to say it again: Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday!

Why?

Part of it is that I’m a nostalgic historian who never got over the stories of the founding of America. The first Thanksgiving is one of those. These early settlers, the Pilgrims, who came here in search of religious freedom, are some of my heroes. Braving the North Atlantic, they landed in a new world, barely survived their first winter, and were rescued only by the generosity of Native Americans.

Part of it is that it’s simple. No presents. No parties. No massive decorations. No standing in lines to shop. It’s just great food and great fun. (Note: before my female readers call for my scalp, I know that for most women and many men, the food part comes after hours of shopping, preparing, cooking and cleaning—anything but simple).

Part of it is family. For me personally, when my daughters and their families come and fill the house with my grandkids, it’s a slice of heaven. My wife’s family comes by the carload. Often the rest of my family comes as well. Just hanging out, talking, watching the cousins play together are incredibly joyous times. Makes me smile just thinking about it.

And part of it is reflection. Thanksgiving is a time when I spend a bit of time thinking about how blessed I am to have my family, to have a home, to live in a free country, to have a great job, and a great purpose, to have friends and just to be alive.

So, I hope that all of you fully enjoy my favorite holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving!
