My Father's Day Wish

My Father's Day Wish

As we approach another Father’s Day here in Australia it gives me some time to reflect.? I was fortunate to go with my son to his school’s Father’s Day Breakfast.? It was a wonderful event that attracted over 1000 fathers to spend the morning and allow them to spend some quality time with their son (or maybe the other way around!).

You see sometimes I think father’s get a bit too busy and preoccupied with work and the constant pressure—which often results in not spending as much time being present as we should.? I know that I have fallen into that trap where I had the right intention, but let work and distractions get in the way.

It was really inspirational to see how many fathers and grandfathers showed up.? I think this year was the biggest turnout that they have had at the school.? Although I have attended these in the past this year was different.? The sunshine may have gotten me into a more thankful mindset but there was a different buzz in the air.? I really enjoyed the time with my son talking about school, his future dreams and sharing a bit about when I went to school (a lot different back then!).? As he is my youngest, I am starting to realise how much I enjoyed this experience with all my kids.

I have really noticed how the role of many current fathers has changed compared to the previous generation.? I know my father and my father-in-law did not worry about doing laundry, preparing meals or taking the time to iron the kids’ clothes.? This happens to be something that many of today’s modern fathers do every week as we look to find ways to contribute to the household. My kids come to me when they need things ironed before my wife, when many of my father’s generation did not know how to iron a shirt—how times have changed (for the better I reckon).

When my wife asked me what I wanted to do for Father’s Day I mentioned I wanted to spend some family time together over a nice meal (that we don’t have to fix!).? So, we planning on doing that this Sunday night.? As everyone in my family will be busy doing their own activities Sunday afternoon, I decided to do something different.? I reached out to a couple of other fathers and we have booked in for a Whisky Tour and Tasting Experience.? I am really looking forward to spending some time with other fathers where we can tell tall stories of the pressure of being a dad (with a big grin on our faces to show we would never change it for anything!).

My wish for you if you are a father is that you have some time to reflect and appreciate the wonderful experiences that you have shared with your family.? Also, regardless of who you are that you smile as you remember some of the great memories that you may have shared with your father or the father figures that had a positive impact in your life.? For the fathers out there, don’t forget to pull the ‘Father’s Day benefit’ to get you out of the dishes, laundry, and cooking—you deserve it!
