My Family and the (DIY) AI Experiment

My Family and the (DIY) AI Experiment

How do we know it’s risky to rely on AI to generate synthetic data to stand in for real humans? We don’t. But fueled by Wonder, our own Jessica Moyer decided to explore the question. Using her family as participants and Microsoft Copilot as the platform, the ask was this:?

“Hey Copilot: Create an image of a California mountain man driving winding roads in a convertible with his wife, an embarrassed teen girl, and a baby boy.”

She planned to tweak, if/as needed, until it resembled a foursome that could pass for some version of her family: Jess, her husband, and their two kids (daughter 12 and baby 11 months.)

Here is a look at how things evolved over three rounds...

I asked Co-pilot to 'create an image of an engineer dad with his wife and two teenage daughters'. After three attempts, the closest AI could get was a wife, a husband and one son. ??
