My experience at the Young European Talent 2018

My experience at the Young European Talent 2018

A few weeks ago, I received an email from the Honorary Counsul of Belgium in Maastricht, telling me that if I was interested, I had been selected as one of the 50 "Young European Talent" from 5 European countries to attend a 3 days program in Maastricht, Netherlands.

Always eager to network and learn about my neighbor's initiatives, I accepted and a couple of weeks later, was on my way to the very cute little Limburg town of Maastricht, not too sure what to expect from the program.

Well, let me tell you how glad I am I said yes.

Let me start with the speakers. We heard about the political journey of Maria Van der Hoeven former head of the International Energy Agency and her message to always stay connected to the "real people" no matter what, from Inge Massen recently appointed Global head of Purpose at DSM, whose passion and drive for infusing sustainability in every part of a company's business is truly inspiring.

From vising the Brightlands Chemelot campus to learn about tomorrow's world changing innovations including plastics alternatives and the Einsten telescope to biking in caves (yes that is a thing) and receiving a pep talk from Jos van Emden, professional cyclist and Bert Van Marwijk, former coach of the dutch national footbal team, every speaker who took time to talk to us was carrying a message of collaboration, inspiration and leadership.

But the best part of these 3 days? The participants! I met so many like minded individuals determined to change their sector or even the world, to use whatever talent they have, whether in the business, science, culture, sports or policy field to make a difference. We laughed, we talked seriously, we exchanged ideas, talked about Europe, sustainability, dutch food and beers.

But most importantly, we used these 3 days to get to know each other, be inspired by each other and promise to keep in touch with each other to promote the YET program, European collaboration and transnational friendship.

So to all my new friends, to all the speakers and hosting institutions and to all the Counsuls and hosts who made this experience possible: a BIG thank you for this unforgettable experience!
