My Experience with PMP Test

According to what I have seen in some jobs’ descriptions, PMP test has become a requirement for some organizations. This is due to the important role that projects play in the growth of the economy and that of the professional project management to be accepted for many jobs.

After obtaining a master's degree in (project management) and writing many articles that explain and clarify the concepts and terminology of (project management), till occupying the position of editor-in-chief of the Project Management Journal, I decided to take the test, as I was fully prepared for this experience.

Shortly then, March 23, 2023 was set the test date. My desire to write my experience and correct some misconceptions about the test is the cornerstone for writing this article. I hope you to benefit from the experience and I wish you succeed from the first test.

First, you must have noticed the article title “Lessons Learned”, by which I meant the learned lessons that are taken into consideration after the project is accomplished, so we can learn it for the coming projects. For this, I announce that I did not pass the test due to many reasons, which I hope that anyone who has reserved a date to do the test or anyone who is preparing themselves for it, to avoid it.

The Agile Hat

While preparing for my test, I found that many advices say that understanding agile would make you pass the test. But this is not true at all, as I exceeded the domain of (people) which targets agile at first.

Therefore, do not focus on one aspect and neglect the other aspects under the pretext of success. It is true that the test focuses on the (flexible-agile) project management model in its seventh edition, but if ?you follow the advice to put on the agile hat, then you should have a knowledge of the hat-making procedures as well as the appropriate business environment for it in the domain.

(Business) Environment and (Process)

Focusing on all details is of a huge importance, as examination algorithms differ from one model to another.

It is not a secret, dear reader, that I finished the last question with complete certainty that I would pass the test while thinking that I performed the test in the best possible manner. But when I received the test report, I realized that the agile is only what I passed.

That is why you should make sure of your agile quality and business environment before you put on your hat.

Do not Rush to Take the Test

The second learned lesson is about solving all the questions. Actually, I did not finish all the real test simulation questions, as I focused on my understanding of the agile methodology, in addition to the fact that I did not take any test again. Accordingly, my advice to you is that you should never get excited with the YouTube clips especially those in English, that talk about the experiences of people who passed the test in two weeks or a month, and you must rely on your performance in the test in all the required domains, and you should even repeat the test until you reach a rate of more than 90%. The measure of your success in the test is that you know all the scenarios, and this will only be found in the simulated tests.

Study in Another Language

As for the third lesson, if you are a person who holds an academic degree in the same field and always read about it, and even write articles as well, when the training course is explained in your mother tongue, the explanation will be boring because it is repetitive information. This is a trap because you apparently know all of the information, but the procedures, variables, and events are the actual test.

Do I Prepare for the Test Immediately and do the Practice Tests?

No, but focus on the explanation. After explaining the general ideas, the order of the process will be explained, which is one of the distinguishing marks in the test, as the order and correctness of the process is one of the most important things, based on which any proposed scenario will be solved.

My advice to you is to study the course in English if the content is mostly Arabic. For me, when I want to write a new article on project management, I read some English references, but reading about this field in Arabic would be on LinkedIn, due to the widespread Arabic project management content on the mentioned platform.

You would feel bored if you got used to a certain language and studied in it, and you would think that you are familiar with all the coordinates. Indeed, I studied a wonderful course in English.

But my desire to add Arabic led me to rely on Arabic, and I did not complete the course on the Udemy platform, unfortunately. Therefore, try to distance yourself from your mother tongue, not in performing the test, but in studying so that you do not feel that the information is repeated and boring. Formulating any scientific material in another language stimulates the brain centers for memorization, as well as comparing and remembering the information quickly. For the test, it is up to you to choose Arabic or English.
