My Experience at Omtec Corp

Introduction

My name is Anthony Thorpe.?Being the Production & Marketing Manager here at Omtec Co, I want to introduce myself and give you guys a little background about my experience here.??In my two years I have learned and grown tremendously.?I am truly grateful to have a boss to take me under his wing and show me the ropes of this business.?There is so much more to learn.?

I remember my first day cutting aluminum to build the frames for our order of 52 Ball Transfer Tables for a customer of ours in November of 2019.?The tops were made of maple but got a Linex coating on them for added protection.?After a couple months the order was complete.?I enjoyed using my hands to build things and I was hooked.?Coming from the automotive industry doing sales and customer service, this was so much better.?Then the pandemic hit.

After a few months I was back to work and I was the only one working at the time.?I had the opportunity to learn every, position, machine, and tool.?My skills increased dramatically and I couldn’t be more grateful for that.?There were times we were slow and there were times we were busy and I had to work over time.?There were personal things going on in my life that I pushed through and showed up to work every day.?It is something that I am very proud of!

It was time for more responsibility, management, and to do more with marketing.?I had no experience.?I had to learn not just management, but leadership.?So what I did was get any information on the internet to learn everything I could.?I realized everything is work in progress.?I am not the best but I will strive to be better every day.?

???????????????We hired a young man to help me out with some of the hands on work.?He is very intelligent and does work diligently.?A couple weeks after he started I noticed some tasks were taking longer than they should.?I took a walk out back and saw he was on his phone standing around.?I said to “keep focused.”?I chose not to get upset with him.?About a week before we did have a conversation about his ADD and anxiety.?Instead of taking this personal I decided to guide him in the right direction and spend more time explaining tasks to keep him busy.?I read that what makes a great leader is someone that has emotional stability and great communication skills.?I did get upset at first but I knew it was something I had to take responsibility for.?If he failed then that meant I failed.?If I took it out on him then he would not feel comfortable here anymore and it would have been more of a reflection on me with my inability to lead.?I feel I should be using the same management style my boss uses.?It is one of the biggest reasons I work here for someone that cares about his workers.

I am sure there will be more obstacles to overcome.?There will be more to learn.?The accomplishments keep me going.?Keep me pushing.?I can’t wait to see what this career has instore for me!
