My Experience at KuKu Connect - A Reflection on Networking and Making Real Connections

Networking is integral to building successful businesses and plays a vital role in creating a social ecosystem. Over a year ago, I relocated from the United States to the United Kingdom, starting everything anew. Upon arriving, I quickly realized that meeting a diverse group of people, both in business and social settings, was beneficial for my growth. Being around the right people is significant for my well-being as an extroverted person; however, I understand the value that networking has for business.?

In networking, we must build relationships and collaborate well with others. Our businesses will only grow if we operate in that space. Although you might be naturally skeptical about networking events due to past experiences, understand that your limited mindset could hinder your progress professionally and personally. It is necessary to approach new situations with an open mind and a willingness to give people a chance. Developing the ability to assess a room quickly can also help you navigate social situations more efficiently, allowing you to determine with whom to associate and when to exit.

Since I am in a transitional phase in business, I did not always know what to say when others asked, "What do you do?" Attending networking events allowed me to refine my own goals and aspirations through the professional conversations in the room. The people at these events were gracious as I candidly shared that I was figuring it out and was in the process of rebranding.?

The night I decided to attend the event hosted by KuKu Connect , I simply wanted to get out of the house and socialise.?

They held this event at the Revolution Bar in downtown Nottingham. When I arrived, it seemed like any other networking event, with people mingling around, some by the bar and others near the complimentary food. Although I recognised a few people from different events, I still felt a bit uneasy, but I decided to take charge and work the room, starting with connecting with familiar faces.

On one occasion, I saw a group of people engaged in a lively conversation. As I was alone, I felt the urge to join in and be a part of their chat. The first person I approached from that group was Philip Brooks-Stephenson, KL, BStJA, FRSA, FCMI , one of the event's co-founders. Honestly, I knew very little about the event and nothing about its hosts.?

While talking to him, I felt comfortable, like I could keep on talking to him. The conversation was easy and flowed naturally. One of his unique networking approaches was introducing people to others who could benefit from each other's services. As fortune would have it, I saw him in action as he connected me with others who could help my businesses grow as needed.?

As the night went on, I felt relaxed and truly enjoyed my time there. Just as I was about to leave, I met someone unexpectedly - it was Stephen Goddard, FRSA ???????? , the other co-founder of KuKu Connect. Like Philip, I did not know who he was. However, although we had not met before, we talked as if we had been friends for years! Our connection felt like kindred spirits rejuvenated by each other's company. Meeting Stephen was a delight.

Overall, my experience at KuKu Connect was positive. It was different from the other networking events I had attended in that it felt more personal and less superficial. It was refreshing to see people genuinely connecting with others. It was a good night, and I look forward to attending future events.

Attending networking events can be highly beneficial in various ways. It provides a platform for meeting new people, building relationships, collaborating with others, and expanding your professional and social network. By attending these events, you can quickly evaluate a room, navigate social situations more efficiently, and refine your own goals and aspirations through professional conversations with others. Networking events offer an excellent opportunity to connect with others who can help grow your business. Additionally, it allows you to give back by introducing people to others who can benefit from their services. These events also provide an excellent chance to step out of your comfort zone, learn and develop new skills, and have fun while doing so.

I only realised today that LinkedIn has an option to write newsletters! Where have I been? Who knew this already?
