My experience as an ITS Intern at the City of Lewisville

As my last semester at the University of Texas at Dallas comes close to an end, I would like to take this time to reflect on the last 15 months of my internship experience at the City of Lewisville as an ITS Intern. This internship gave me the opportunity to gain the skills and experience that I needed to graduate with confidence, as well as start my career in the industry that I am looking forward to.

As an ITS intern, my primary tasks were to provide technical support to over 18 departments and over 150 different applications that are used within the city. I had the privilege to work with an amazing IT team that truly values every single team member. Here are my most important takeaways from this internship:

My first and most important takeaway from this internship is the importance of teamwork. Here at the City of Lewisville, I got to experience teamwork with one of the best teams I have ever worked with. We had scheduled weekly meetings to discuss any updates or issues we worked on. There was constant communication throughout the department about different issues and how to troubleshoot them. The collaboration of the IT team helped me understand how productive, efficient, and creative teamwork can be, all of which helped me greatly improve my problem-solving skills.

My second important takeaway was the importance of asking questions and sharing ideas. When I first started this internship, I barely had any IT experience. Looking back on it now, I can see how much asking questions and sharing my ideas helped me grow. When I began my internship, I was always encouraged by my supervisor and coworkers to ask questions on anything, no matter how insignificant the question may seem. I was always reminded by my team members that I am here to learn and that everyone is willing to help. This internship not only helped me troubleshoot the different applications the city uses but has also opened the door to so many possibilities in the IT realm. I was able to discover just how vast the IT world is.

Overall, my experience at the City of Lewisville has been nothing short of an adventure. From collaborating with different teams to helping end-users resolve technical issues, there was never a dull moment. I always had a chance to learn something new or skills to improve on. I was able to learn so many soft and technical skills that I am excited to carry forward with me in my Information Technology career. I greatly appreciate what the City of Lewisville and its IT department have done for me during this incredible experience.
