My Experience Interning at GK Global

During my summer internship at GK Global, I had the unique opportunity to immerse myself in the world of supply chain analytics within a leading multinational corporation. With its diverse business units spanning textiles, real estate, technology, agriculture, and lifestyle, GK Global is a powerhouse in Central America and beyond.

I spent the first half of my internship in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, where I gained a comprehensive understanding of the supply chain processes that start from cotton and culminate in fabric production. Visits to the Green Valley Manufacturing Hub, Northern Textiles, and Honduras Spinning Mills allowed me to witness the numerous steps in transforming raw cotton into high-quality fabric. The second half of my internship took me to Mexico, where I observed fabric conversion into finished garments at Karim's Textiles and AMMAR Apparel. This experience provided a holistic view of the entire supply chain, from raw materials to finished products.

In Honduras, I was fortunate to be mentored by Samantha Flores. Assisting her involved analyzing container arrival data and creating visualizations in Excel that tracked weekly arrivals and the days until arrival for a specific shipping line. This analysis helped identify the most and least reliable shipping lines. This task pushed me out of my comfort zone, requiring me to showcase advanced Excel skills and understand complex logistics data. Samantha's guidance was invaluable, helping me navigate challenges and encouraging me to think critically about ways to streamline processes.

My time in Mexico was spent working closely with the Product Management Team, focusing on planning, purchasing, and pricing. Utilizing SAP software, I became proficient in consolidating fabric across various warehouses to ensure optimal distribution and prevent overstocking or understocking. I learned to monitor inventory levels and coordinate fabric movements effectively. In the purchasing aspect, I identified low fabric supplies and determined the precise timing for new purchases, striking a balance to avoid warehouse overflow or underflow. Additionally, I acquired strategies to reduce the selling cost of each garment by analyzing fabric consumption and finding ways to maximize fabric usage while minimizing waste.

This summer has significantly contributed to my professional and personal growth, and I am immensely grateful to everyone who supported my learning journey. The factory visits, mentorship, and opportunities to work on real-world projects have been invaluable. I am excited to apply the skills and knowledge I have gained to future experiences. Thank you to GK Global, Mr. Yusuf Amdani, and everyone else who made this internship a transformative experience!
