My Experience Interning at the Maryland Department of Transportation

Through the Maryland Public Service Scholars Programs , I had a summer internship with the Maryland Department of Transportation , Human Resources. Being an intern was a unique experience where I was empowered, inspired, and learned something new daily. From walking in on my first day until leaving ten weeks later, I gained so much knowledge and experience I did not know I would have before I started.
From the beginning, I was treated as an employee, not just an intern. If there was something I did not know, there was always someone to ask for help. I have learned how to use Adobe Captivate to create employee engagement training programs, create fillable forms, and head the MDOT Newsletter. I met with various department chief deputies. I gained knowledge regarding equal pay and the implementation of adjustments to the organization's policy due to the recent legalization of marijuana during the meetings, which changed my outlook.
As a result of my experiences, my advice for future interns is to note what goes on within the organization. For example, pay attention when problems arise and recognize how your mentor solves them by being aware of the big picture and not only your specific task. Take initiative and show passion for your work and the company. Lastly, ask lots of questions.

I now have a better grasp of the significance of social justice, diversity, and equality because they all reinforce one another and have the potential to transform the world. We may change societal norms and develop societal components focused on equity rather than equality when all these factors come into play and are acknowledged. Of course, achieving social justice should be our ultimate objective as individuals as we work to liberate those parts of ourselves that have restricted and constrained others. Because people must accept that there will be disparities, I see diversity and appreciation as the cornerstone of this equality equation.
This internship taught me practical knowledge, communication, networking, and leadership skills. Although honing those talents may take some time, I am confident. The experience has given me much insight into my skill set and increased self-assurance. It has aided in directing my career goals and will undoubtedly assist me in making future career decisions. My experience has helped me get closer to my objectives, and I am eager to see what the future holds!
