My Experience as a Business Intelligence Intern at Toyota Industries Commercial Finance

As I prepare to wrap up my internship this summer, I just wanted to share a quick update! This summer, I have had the pleasure of being a Business Intelligence Intern at Toyota Industries Commercial Finance. Throughout my time here, I gained valuable experience through my projects and by being pushed out of my comfort zone.?

My main project this summer focused on the uses of AI and Machine Learning at TICF. I spearheaded the use of machine learning at TICF to create a proof of concept demonstrating how AI and machine learning can streamline decision-making and business processes. I built a machine learning model that could predict the status of rented equipment through the use of Azure Machine Learning Studios. It started with figuring out the requirements and preparing the data needed to train the model, followed by designing, training, testing, and deploying the model. I am super excited to be responsible for taking the first step for TICF to explore this exciting new technology that can change the way business is done.?

Another aspect of my internship was the amazing work culture. The culture at TICF was very inclusive and very oriented around the people. I really felt valued and welcomed by everyone around me, as they embodied the TICF value of being kind and generous to everyone. I want to take a moment to thank my managers Eric Preston , John Clifford , and Xincheng Tang for their continuous support and encouragement. Their guidance and feedback were instrumental in my project's success. I also want to thank Gabriela Bazan for her expertise and guidance throughout my projects. Her insights and suggestions significantly improved the quality of my work. Another shoutout to my fellow intern, Andrew Sobrinho , who was a great team member. Finally, I would like to thank Bailie Hirst for maximizing the internship experience and really making us feel welcome.

I would also like to highlight what I learned throughout this internship. In our classes at UTD, we work on projects and assignments where we use tools such as SQL, Power BI, Tableau, and more, but usually, in these projects, the data is well-designed and easy to use. One of the most beneficial aspects of this internship was not only refining my skills in the real world with tools such as SQL and Power BI but also gaining experience working with real-world data sets where the data is not perfect. Learning how to navigate these challenges was extremely valuable to my technical growth. Before this internship, I did not have much experience with AI or machine learning (other than ChatGPT), so my project really opened my eyes to how it can transform businesses in the future. I was also able to gain valuable skills in that field that can aid me in the future.?

As I approach the end of my time at TICF, I feel extremely thankful for the experience I have had. Interning at TICF was extremely rewarding, as it not only equipped me with valuable skills but also instilled in me Toyota’s principle of "Kaizen" (continuous improvement). I am excited to carry these lessons forward and continue my journey!
