My Encounter With Nigerian Police In 2006.
No matter how bright your future looks like and confident you become to take on the ills in the society as a youth in Nigeria, when you meet a police man, your moral go fall. You may never know what happens next.
After my first degree graduation, on my way home, we met some hungry looking police men.
With my eye glass on, I tried to examine their actions. While others were busy stopping other cars on the road, one of them said to our driver “driver where your paper”? The driver brought out his car papers.
He took the papers and was waving it in front of the driver’s face and Again, he shouted, give me your paper?
The driver said I nor get change. Make I drop another time. Abeg.
The next thing I heard was everybody come down.
There was this heavily pregnant woman that occupied the front sit with the driver.
The policeman with AK 47 on his hand ready to cock the gun was now furious.
Some passengers began to shout. Driver give am money na, make we comot for here.
Someone offered to give money to the driver since the police man refused to understand that the driver had nothing on him at that moment. The driver was hoping to collect some money from the passengers, get his fuel tank filled up in the next petrol station and get some change for the policemen that he will meet on the road that day. So, he did not expect them to mount road block at that sport that day.
The police man was smelling of alcohol and weed by the time he came close to me. Imagine the mixture on duty with a gun on his hand. Everyone came down from the bus to avoid more chaos. But the heavily pregnant woman could not due to her condition.
The next thing was a shout, “madam you nor go come down”. That was when I had to say sir. But this woman is heavily pregnant. Apparently, she struggled to come down but decided to stay back due to discomfort.
The police man turned to me and said to me ‘weting concern you, You dey speak Oyibo, Na you go school’. He followed up with a slap, My moral fall. Everybody FEM.
The driver later collected money from a passenger, gave it to the police man, then we where allowed to continue our journey.
That same police man may still be out there right now waiting for his next victim.
I want a better Nigeria for my daughter.
