??????My Email Testing Guide: Split Testing, Recording Results & Analyzing for Success
Everything is a test.
Over the past 5 years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching hundreds of copywriters and business owners how to make more money with email.?
And my biggest takeaway is that 90% of what we believe to be true, isn’t.?
And this goes double for what we believe will sell or not.?
The single biggest reason why people struggle to make the easiest money of their life?
They don’t have a process for coming up with – and testing – new promotions on an ongoing basis.
I’m not talking about newbies and small business owners when I say this either.?
This sad fact applies to the most well respected DTC Ecom brands and direct response companies you’ve heard of…
As well as the multi-billion dollar brands who spend millions on media.
In 2018, I was invited to none other than Agora Financial to consult specifically on email and train their short form copywriters.
You see, the majority of their revenue, and I mean 80%, is generated through their email channels, and the majority of their losses come from advertising.?
And when I sat down with several of their publishers in charge of some of their biggest divisions, I couldn’t believe they weren’t leveraging their email channels to test offers before taking them to market.
Proof that almost no one has any clue what they’re doing. So what winds up happening?
They spend tens of thousands of dollars hiring, training and managing long form copywriters to build offers.?
They wait 2-3 months before it’s finished… and then spend tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands of dollars more on media buys…
BEFORE they even know if the offer is gonna work or not!
That. Is. CRAZY.
Instead, I like to use email as the ultimate testing ground for validating ideas as fast as possible.?
All you need is a product, an email list, and a simple checkout experience… and you can be making money almost immediately.
But to do this effectively, you need a process for creating - and testing – all of the testable variables.
So, in the last several posts, I broke down step-by-step the stupidly simple system I teach short form copywriters, email marketers and the one I help implement at businesses like Agora.
And in this, my last and final post in this series, I would like to share the 4 things you should be doing if you want to see results.

Most business owners know they “should” A/B split test their marketing… but almost none of them do.
And sadly, this costs them untold millions of dollars in lost sales and missed opportunities.?
And when it comes to email, split testing something as simple as the subject line can deliver the biggest results and most importantly, insights.
The obvious reason is the more opens you get, the more eyes you get on your message, which in turn helps you understand what works and what doesn’t…
But the non-obvious reason is something that’s hard to believe until you see it happen…
By changing ONLY the subject line, I’ve seen click through rates stay the same… but the total sales from that email double or triple.?
Why? Who knows. My guess is as good as yours.
But the point is, you’ll never discover the huge leverage points in your marketing if you’re not constantly testing.?
At a minimum, you should be split testing your subject lines with every email you send.?
And if whatever email service provider you’re using can’t easily run split tests... you should consider switching to one that does.

???? You Should Be Recording Your Results
If you want to scale your business, you have to know your numbers.?
But the sad truth is there’s a LOT of business owners who have no clue what’s working and what’s not…
Sometimes this is because they aren’t tracking anything at all… but more often than not, it’s a process issue.?
Data gets generated in several different places, and the business owner doesn’t know what to do with it or how to make any sense of it…
Which is exactly why it’s your biggest opportunity right now!
One of the magical things about email is it’s way easier to get clean data.?
At the end of every promotion you run, all you need to do is record the total opens, clicks, and revenue of each email.?
Once you’ve done that, you assign your winner based on the total “Earnings Per Click” (or EPC)...
Which brings me to my final point…
???? You Should Be Analyzing and Optimizing
Here’s the cool part about broadcast promotions. You can always run them again!?
Which is why you always want to make sure you’re looking at your results and looking for opportunities to Analyze your data and look for ways to Optimize results.
You have three main metrics to look at. Opens, clicks, and sales.?
Obviously, the higher your open rate is the better your emails will do…
But the REAL metric you want to Optimize for is something called “Earnings Per Click” (or EPC for short). Here’s why…
Whenever you send someone an email, the only way for them to buy something is to click on the link and go to whatever page you send them to.?
Which means you can only optimize two things in this equation.?
The quality of clicks… which means you’re giving the reader more information in the email so they know why they’re clicking and what’s on the other side of the click.
The quality of earnings... which is impacted by the sales copy on the page you’re sending the clicks to, and the price of the offer.
You can do more selling in the email and send clicks to a simple cart page…
You can do super short emails that send emails to a long form sales letter, VSL, or webinar…
Or something in between.
You’ll have to test to see what works best for your business and your list…?
But if you want to turbo charge your growth, pay attention to your EPC and get relentless about improving it.
