Will my EV battery last?

As more used EVs become available and increasingly at prices lower than their petrol or diesel equivalents, battery life is something that may be a concern. In this post, I've found independent evidence, that shows the battery is likely to outlast the car.

How Long Does an EV Battery Last?

Recent data published by Geotab, which provides telematics vehicle and asset tracking solutions to over 50,000 customers in 160 countries, indicates that electric vehicle (EV) batteries will now last 20 years or more.? According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the average age of a car at scrappage in the UK is 13.9 years.

In short, a battery will outlast a car’s average lifespan. Geotab analysed the battery health of almost 5,000 fleet and private EVs, representing nearly 1.5 million days of telematics data, to learn how well the latest battery technology lasts.

The result was that batteries degrade, on average, by 1.8% per year – compared to 2.3% when Geotab last performed analysis of EV battery health in 2019.

The best-performing EV models in the?updated Geotab analysis?posted a battery degradation rate of just 1.0%. Generally, this is a slower deterioration rate than seen with internal combustion engine (ICE) drivetrain components.?

Reflecting on the evidence, David Savage , Vice President for the UK and Ireland at Geotab, noted;

“The fact is that a 1.8% decline in battery health is unlikely to have a significant impact on most driver’s daily vehicle needs, and this number will only come down further with new EV models and improved battery technology.”

Battery degradation explained?

Battery degradation?is a natural process that permanently reduces the amount of energy a battery can store or the amount of power it can deliver.

The batteries in EVs can generally deliver more power than the powertrain components can handle. As a result, power degradation is rarely observable in EVs and only the loss of the battery’s ability to store energy matters. An EV battery’s condition is called its state of health (SOH). Batteries start their life with 100% SOH and deteriorate over time.

One potentially surprising insight from the Geotab research is that high-use electric vehicles did not show significantly higher battery degradation than others.

Will we be upgrading the car and keeping the battery in the next 20 years, isn't the battery the most expensive component?

Great article Dave, I am seeing more of the positive indicators of battery life, in the news, let’s hope this leads to better EV value retention. One of the biggest reasons surveys state that buyers are holding off going for full BEVs is re-sale value.

There are first edition Tesla Model S cars with over 250,000 miles on them and have only lost 10% of their original charging capacity. I guess that partly answers the question of battery longevity.
