I have been mentoring youngsters on Happy2Help - Open Mentoring Group and the most frequently asked question is which company I should join?

The framework which I have been following is ICC - Industry Company Culture

First, you should decide which industry you want to work for like Financial Services, Healthcare, E-commerce, etc. Then you should decide on which type of company you want to work for like MNC, startups, etc. Finally, the most important aspect is the culture of the company. The culture can nurture your skills and help you grow in your career.

The most important aspect of any job is your Lead/Mentor/Manager. You might have heard the saying 'people don't leave a job - they leave the boss' and yes it’s the truth. You need a right person who can mentor you to grow like never before.

Mentoring involves few important aspects like below

what you know vs what you should know - what are the action items? Is there anything you can improve in your behaviour or attitude? Someone who can understand your personal and professional goals and can come up with action items to achieve your goals. One with whom you can share your day-to-day challenges and discuss to find the solution around the same.

The other important aspect is the team you're going to work with. Look for one-team culture. The team should help and encourage you to conquer your weaknesses. Every team has few strengths and few weaknesses. The team should assess both and come up with action items to achieve the end goal. The team should clearly understand individual responsibilities and common goals.

20-percent-project. We learn in very unique and often unexpected ways. You are encouraged to explore anything other than your normal day-to-day job. Real breakthrough happens when we are free from others expectations and driven by individual passion.

E-learning and reading. Company which can give access to online courses to learn the latest and greatest technologies, tools and frameworks. Reading is the best way to re-think and innovate.

Open culture is very important. Everyone should be encouraged to share their views and individuals inputs should be valued and considered. One should have access to anyone and everyone within the team and there shouldn’t be any unnecessary boundaries.

In an ideal scenario, you should be the top priority of your company. Look for a company who value their people over everything else. As a human, we need appreciation to keep up the good work so reward and recognition play a very important role. Freedom and responsibility can help you drive things your way. Good companies hire smart people and let them do their job instead of micromanagement.
