In my day, we appreciated getting the worms, as work bonus

Today's workers are spoiled. In my day, we competed to get to work early so we could get the bonus, a bucket of worms. That is where the expression comes from, the early bird catches the worm. It was either a) an extra food ration or b) re-invested into fishing, to quadruple the rations from the supply. If you crossed the second fence post first after the outside gate opened- you were the early bird- you got the worms, and your picture on the wall, proclaiming you to be the early bird, the whole of the 12 hour work day.

Today, workers would scoff at worms as a bonus, because their jobs have to pay enough to eat to get back to work, and it has made people soft and unappreciative of the value of work, and under appreciative of the value of worms, meals, and worms as meals.
