My Data Research Internship Journey with TLT-Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

Embarking on my role as a Data Research Intern at TLT-Tomorrow’s Leaders Today was an immensely fulfilling experience, rich with opportunities for growth, learning, and tangible impact. As a nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing youth leaders through education and mentorship, TLT’s mission deeply resonated with me. During the 10-week program as a Data Research Spring 2024 Remote Intern, I had the privilege of immersing myself in the realm of data research, uncovering insights that contribute to positive change in Texas communities.

My responsibilities as a Data Research were centered around resources across Texas that focused on populations in or aging out of adoption/foster care, underserved communities, and rural communities. From researching and data collection to analyzing the company’s impact, I found my role challenging and rewarding. Over the 10 weeks, I was tasked with a new project each week. Using a variety of data visualization and analysis software and tools (Excel, Tableau, Google Analytics, and Power BI), I prepared weekly presentations that I would present to my intern cohort and the founder of TLT - Tomorrow's Leaders Today, Elaine Smith-Poyourow, MAM, NPM herself.

Despite being a remote intern, I felt fully supported by the TLT team. Throughout my internship, I participated in weekly meetings focused on professional development, where I engaged in discussions on leadership, teamwork, and effective communication. These meetings provided a supportive environment for learning and growth, allowing me to refine my skills and expand my knowledge beyond technical expertise. Bi-weekly coaching sessions and an assigned project manager provided structure and guidance, while flexible work hours enabled me to balance my internship responsibilities with other commitments.

What truly made my internship fulfilling was the knowledge that my work was making a tangible difference in the lives of Texas youth. By researching resources available to populations in or aging out of adoption/foster care, underserved communities, and rural areas, I knew I was contributing to positive change and empowerment. Additionally, by assisting in creating insights for the company’s End of Year Impact Report, I could showcase how the company’s growth has led to a wider outreach to Texas communities, further aligning with their values.

As my internship comes to a close, I am grateful for the experiences and opportunities afforded me by TLT. My internship with TLT-Tomorrow’s Leaders Today has been nothing short of transformative. From delving into data to making a meaningful impact in Texas communities, every moment has been a stepping stone toward personal and professional growth. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such a dynamic and impactful organization. I look forward to carrying the lessons I learned in my future endeavors.
