My current reads

A few days ago, ?? André Claa?en ?? shared the books he is currently reading and asked for our current reads.

Here are mine, André:

1) "You're Not Listening" by Kate Murphy

??I finished this one just a few hours ago. Murphy explains, why we usually suck at listening and how to do better. It made me stop putting my phone on the dinner table. The author claims that simply the presence of that device is a threat to my counterparts in the sense of "if what you are saying is not interesting, I will switch to my phone instead."

I liked the book a lot. Full recommendation.

2) "The Extended Mind" by Annie Murphy Paul

The book claims, that we can "extend" our brain. She mentions 3 areas for doing so: Use using bodily motions (e.g. a walk), use spaces (e.g. switching offices) and relationships (e.g. think together with peers). The book is full of good examples and all of them seem to be backed by science.

A very fascinating topic and good to read. I put it on pause a few weeks ago to read book 1) first and now I am already excited to dive in again.

3) "Tribe of Mentors" by Tim Ferriss

This is my very first book by Tim Ferriss. It's about what successful people responded to him when Ferriss sent them a questionnaire of 11 questions. The questions are like "If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it — what would it say and why?".

The prologue of the book was the most entertaining one I read in a long time. Ferriss is a brillant writer. It really made me wanting to answer the 11 questions myself right away (and I will do that exercise soon). I don't know yet how useful the advice of those presumably successful people are for me but I already like reading their answers to explore how other people think.

4) "Weltrettung braucht Wissenschaft" (Saving the world needs science) by Franca Parianen Lesemann et al.

?How would our world look like if we would actually listen to science? The author asks important scientists for their advice.

?This one is very different to common books I read about climate crisis and other challenges we face as mankind: Mrs. Parianen writes very entertaining. She assembled scientists who are not only good in their field but also very good in telling stories about it. It is such an refreshing read comparing with most boring climate books. Big recommendation already. I don't know whether there's an English version, too.

?By the way: I found this book via the great book recommendation video by Patrick Niedermayer .

For this year, I decided only to read novels, no work-related books (apart from textbooks I need for lectures). Quite enjoyable, I have to say! ??

also: Loved Tribe of mentors. Totally recommend that. That book introduced me to the books of Derek Sivers which are one of my favorite books of all time. If you are curious start with "anything you want". It made me get pizza as payment for extra work thats annoying but felt wrong to charge for, from people from the other side of germany – they loved it, and I got pizza ??

OK, seemingly anyone here reads multiple books at once –?impressive. Imposter syndrome is rising. I want to feel worthy of being included in Udo's tribe (thanks for asking me Udo ??).? So to have list that comes close to be as impressive as all the others he asked, I'll give you my ??????-star-books of 2023 so far (my rating only has a maximum of 3 stars): https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/my-star-books-2023-so-far-patrick-niedermayer

Great examples, Udo. I think, “You're not Listening” is a must-read for me because listening is sometimes a challenge for me. My electronic devices are a really stark threat, so your advice, to ban the devices from the table, is a good one. I have to put away my Apple Watch too. And I admit, I'm a fan of the podcast and the books by Tim Ferris. As Tim said, you should read his book as inspiration, like a buffet of ideas, and never as a blueprint.
