My Conversation with a Medieval Monk
"Distractions are like squirrels. The more you chase them, the more they run. Focus is like a laser beam – it cuts through everything with ease." - Unknown
I was curious how medieval monks kept their mental and emotional sanity in check amidst the chaos. So I interviewed one, and here is how it went.
Modern man: Greetings, Brother! I'm struggling to stay focused on my work and life. Why do you think it's so hard to concentrate these days?
Medieval monk: Welcome, my son. In the modern world, many things distract you from your tasks and duties. Technology, for example, is a double-edged sword. While it has made our lives easier, it can also be a source of constant distraction.
Modern man: Yes, I agree. I can't go five minutes without checking my phone for notifications.
Medieval monk: Aye, and information overload is also a problem. You have so much information at your fingertips that it's easy to become overwhelmed and distracted. Multitasking is another issue. People think it's a way to maximize productivity, but it often has the opposite effect.
Modern man: That's true. I find myself switching between tasks so much that I can't seem to focus on any one thing for too long.
Medieval monk: Stress and anxiety also contribute to your lack of focus. When you feel anxious or stressed, your brain is easily distracted, which makes it difficult to focus on tasks that require sustained attention.
Modern man: I see. What about poor habits? Do they also affect our ability to focus?
Medieval monk: Aye, they can. Our habits and routines play a role in our ability to focus. For example, spending too much time watching TV, playing video games, or browsing the internet can make it hard to develop the ability to focus on other tasks.
Modern man: That makes sense. But what can we do about it?
Medieval monk: Mindfulness is the key. We medieval monks practiced mindfulness by focusing our thoughts on the present moment and letting go of distractions. This allowed us to remain centered and focused on our spiritual practices. Mindfulness was a key part of the monastic tradition, and we were taught to be mindful in all aspects of our lives – whether at work or in our prayers.
Modern man: I see. What about time management?
Medieval monk: We structured our days around a strict schedule of work, prayer, and rest. This helped us to stay organized and one task, and prevented us from wasting time on distractions. The monastic tradition placed great emphasis on the value of time, and we were taught to use our time wisely and avoid wasting it on distractions.
Modern man: And what about silence?
Medieval monk: We medieval monks lived in silence, which helped us to avoid distractions and focus on our spiritual practices. In the monastic tradition, silence was used to foster contemplation and reflection. We were taught to use silence to our thoughts, feelings, and the voice of God.

Modern man: I can see how these techniques could be helpful in the modern world. And is there anything else I should keep in mind?
Medieval monk: Focus on the big picture. We medieval monks focused on our ultimate spiritual goals and did not let distractions get in the way of our progress. In the monastic tradition, we were taught to keep our ultimate goals in mind and to use our daily practices to achieve them.
Modern man: Thank you, Brother, for your wise words. I will try to incorporate these techniques into my life to reduce stress and distractions and find greater meaning and purpose in my daily activities.
Medieval monk: You are welcome, my son. May you find peace and focus in your life. And remember, to
"Starve Your Distractions, and Feed Your Focus."
