My Cathartic Journey of Writing

My Cathartic Journey of Writing

It is with great joy and a sense of profound purpose that I share my journey in co-authoring a chapter for a book celebrating women in leadership. This opportunity could not have come at a more apt time, as it allowed me to embark on a journey of self-reflection and self-discovery.

Chapter 4 of SheLeads Book (Vol 2), titled Reshaping the Leadership Narrative: Embracing the harmonious Fusion Nurturing, Resolute Principles and Femininity as a Catalyst for Change,? I explore the experiences and values that have shaped my own leadership style. But my journey of self-discovery went beyond that; it led me to draw inspiration from a remarkable figure who had a profound impact on my life—my late mother, Helen Cheramboss.

My mother was an extraordinary leader, a dedicated high school principal who fearlessly guided her students and staff, instilling in them a sense of purpose and propelling them towards success. Her unwavering dedication, her ability to inspire, and her commitment to stewardship left an indelible mark on me. I learned from her that true leadership transcends mere authority; it involves guiding, inspiring, and empowering others to reach their full potential. Her leadership style became the foundation upon which I built my own leadership journey.

However, my mother's story was left untold. She passed away before sharing her own experiences and leadership insights. While her story is not mine to tell, her legacy lives on through the leadership lessons she instilled in me. Writing the chapter was cathartic; it allowed me to honor her memory by sharing the invaluable lessons I learned from her.

Throughout the chapter, I draw on various aspects of my journey to provide insight into what it means to be a woman in leadership. From the nurturing qualities I inherited from my mother to the resolute principles instilled by my father's paramilitary leadership, I have strived to create a leadership style that is compassionate and disciplined, empathetic and resolute.

In the intricate tapestry of leadership, I discovered that the path to success is not without its challenges. Whether it was confronting gender biases, leading a team of older and more seasoned members, or resisting the temptation of people-pleasing, I learned to navigate these obstacles and emerge as a strong and authentic leader.

Throughout my journey, I've embraced the transformative power of failure, the importance of effective delegation, the significance of building trust and respect, and the balance between strength and approachability. I've learned that true leadership is about making a meaningful impact and achieving remarkable results, not merely seeking popularity or conforming to expectations.

In the corporate world, women have often felt pressured to conform to rigid masculine norms to gain recognition. However, I've come to understand that embracing our innate femininity can be a transformative asset in leadership. By breaking free from stereotypes, redefining leadership, and embracing our unique qualities, we can create a personal brand that combines self-expression and professionalism.

I've also recognized the power of emotional intelligence, the importance of overcoming insecurities, and the value of self-care and prioritization. Effective communication and active listening have been pivotal in fostering meaningful connections and enabling diverse perspectives to shine.

As I reflect on my journey, I've come to realize that leadership is an ongoing process of growth and self-improvement. It's a journey that requires continuous learning, a strong support network, and a commitment to staying true to oneself.

Embracing femininity, celebrating our unique strengths, and letting our authentic selves shine through are all key components of successful leadership. The world is waiting for your remarkable contributions as a leader, just as it has been waiting for mine.

My story is a testament to the resilience and determination of women in leadership roles. It is a story of how excellence, stewardship, and femininity can coexist harmoniously. I am grateful for the lessons I've learned, and I am excited to see where this journey leads next.

Mrs. Cheramboss was my high school principal. She was more of a mother to us than a principal. Infact, she taught me how to be a woman of substance. She may not have told her story, but those that passed through her hands will tell her story. Soar higher, you are your mother's daughter!!!
