My Career Journey with Oleson: From Pharma to Data Centers

In 2022, I started my journey in Ireland by undertaking a master’s degree in Innovative Technology Engineering. A degree which I hoped would provide a path for me to excel both technically and professionally. After completing my master’s with flying colours, I sought an opportunity to apply my expertise in process automation within Ireland’s process industry. As I had previous hands-on experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC) and different communication protocols I wanted to utilise these while continuing to grow my skillset within the automation and technology field. I just needed to be given a chance!

I was contacted by Oleson while I was putting the finishing touches on my thesis. After a couple of interviews, I was fortunate to be offered a position that would prove to be a launch pad. My first day starting felt like I was taking my first steps in the European market and the fast-paced pharmaceutical sector. Oleson made this possible by not only giving me my first position but also by opening doors to one of the largest companies in the industry.

In this first role, I was assigned as an Automation Engineer with a global pharmaceutical leader, managing a range of automation and process control responsibilities. I was also involved in a network migration project, developing network infrastructure, and process control automation across advanced PLC platforms. This encompassed a range of technical responsibilities; handling various PLC platforms, such as 西门子 and Allen-Bradley , and managing Industrial PCs with older operating systems.

This experience proved to be a valuable learning curve, as working in a regulated environment, such as CFR21 Compliance, was entirely new to me. Working in the Pharmaceutical industry enhanced my knowledge of the specific requirements relating to system documentation and management. As the technical side is concerned, It also deepened my understanding about network familiarity with plant IT infrastructure, and data backup solutions within a complex pharmaceutical setting. What could have been a daunting challenge was helped by Oleson’s support throughout my time. I felt like everyone was rooting for me to succeed and this was integral to my success here. Allowing me to focus on the work and gain exposure to a highly technical and regulated environment.

After a successful year in pharmaceuticals, I transitioned to a Building Management Systems (BMS) commissioning project for a new Data Centre. Although It was quite different from the Pharmaceutical industry, the data centre sector is rapidly growing across Europe. So I was excited by the long-term career options this type of experience would give me. ?It also provided invaluable experience in reviewing technical documentation, troubleshooting PLC codes, and hands-on work with electrical panels.

This transition from the pharmaceutical environment to data center operations was hard for me but I have received great support from Oleson in understanding the process of Building Management Systems (BMS). Technical mentorship from experienced data center engineers has really aided my development. In these weekly sessions, I can discuss challenges and work through solutions. This can range from consulting on a variety of PLC codes to better understanding the network pathway between primary BMS components and supervisory control. This open desk environment has enabled me to sit with professionals, ensuring I achieve the task I have been assigned.

During my time with Oleson, I’ve been thoroughly supported by a team of experts in all areas of the business. The journey from an Automation Engineer in pharmaceuticals to a BMS Commissioning Engineer has not only enhanced my technical skills but also strengthened my ability to work in diverse environments. I don’t believe I would have been supported, encouraged or learned so much anywhere else. Looking forward I’m excited to continue my Oleson journey and seeing what the future holds for me – all I know is it’s bound to be exciting.
