My candid conversation with aspiring CEOs at the McKinsey Global Business Leaders Forum

  1. Don't be afraid to make transformational moves, but do your homework to inform those decisions.
  2. Hire people who are smarter than you and give them the runway to succeed.
  3. Have someone on your senior team who you can trust to tell you the truth - no matter what.
  4. Recognize that everyone has biases, even you, so engage others who can present facts objectively.
  5. Build strong relationships with your Board and lean on their expertise.
  6. You can't promise employees lifetime employment, but you can provide lifelong learning opportunities.
  7. Make sure you leave the company better than when you found it.
  8. Get yourself a dog because you'll need some unconditional love.

Agreed, but it’s tough to do when UTC slashes the tuition reimbursement program and doesn’t protect the employees who signed on before the change. Gotta treat your people better Mr. Hayes!!
