My BP Internship: Say Hello to My Champion (Day 44)

If you're lucky, you get one or a few champions in your corner. These people play the role of a manager, mentor, work colleague, and/or angel. (Don't discount the angels…they show up when we least expect them to.) Champions are rare. I liken them to a needle in a haystack…a diamond in the rough…or a prince in a sea of frogs. (I think I've hammered that point enough.)

In any case, when you find your champions--the people that support you--hold on tight. Let them know that you appreciate them and don't take their time, wisdom, and political capital for granted. Everyone won't be your biggest fan...and you know what? Maybe they're not supposed to be. The people who do; however, want to see you win--show them some love, or should I say gratitude. Sustain those relationships. Water them. Put them in sunlight. Ensure that those relationships continue to flourish.

I've come across so many champions this summer. (I didn't even think it was possible.) In previous years, I wasn't exactly sure what to call my supporters and mentors. But now, after working with some truly amazing and authentic people, I can articulate what a champion looks like.

A Champion…

• Vouches for your character
• Provides timely feedback in a tactful manner
• Is honest with you (every time)
• Knows the intentions behind your actions
• Knows how you want to make an impact on the world
• Doesn't let anyone disrespect you, your reputation, or your work
• Doesn't let you make a fool of yourself
• Is excited about your career trajectory
• Recommends you for new opportunities
• Empathizes with your situation when you feel under fire
• Introduces you to the right people (who can add to your life)
• Warns you about the people (who may attempt to destroy the legacy you've built)
• Creates opportunity and celebrates your success
