My book, my frustration, and my hope

Did you know the U.S. spends more than double on healthcare than any other wealthy nation, yet has the lowest life expectancy among its peers? It astounds me with so much money and resources available that we keep getting sicker and dying earlier. It’s clear to me that our healthcare system is broken, and we need to work together to overhaul it completely.
My frustration with the state of the state led me to begin writing a book about what I’ve witnessed in the past two decades as a spine surgeon, a decade as the CEO of the Midwest Spine & Brain Institute , and witnessing the underbelly of the healthcare industry. I’m tired that most people who walk into my examination room looking for answers have completely preventable health issues and are mostly oblivious to the decisions that led to their chronic conditions.
I’ve seen first-hand and studied how the food industry, Big Pharma, and lobbyists are putting their interests above yours resulting in us becoming sicker and less happy. Our bodies have become commodities. We are exploited for the sake of shareholders. I’ve probably had hundreds of conversations with healthcare CEOs, administrators, doctors, nurses, and, more importantly, tens of thousands of patients desperate for a change.
One of the chapters I recently completed for my book is about the deeply flawed food system that is directly harming public health. A staggering number of chronic diseases, obesity, and preventable illnesses can be traced back to the foods we consume—and the marketing tactics that push these unhealthy choices, especially on children.
Our children deserve better than being treated as consumers of the food industry’s toxic choices. Instead, we need early education on proper nutrition, mental wellness, and healthy lifestyles. Schools, families, and communities should focus on teaching kids about balanced diets, the dangers of processed foods, and the long-term benefits of choosing whole, nutritious options.
Double The Insight, Twice The Wellness
Our podcast just keeps growing. I’m incredibly grateful for all our guests who have lent their expertise, but most importantly, you, the listeners who are hungry to learn how to lead healthier, more productive lives. I would like to highlight two new episodes this week.
The first is with . David L. Katz, MD, MPH , a globally recognized authority on preventive medicine, nutrition, and lifestyle health. In the podcast, he offered a behind-the-scenes look at how the world's top diets are ranked by US News & World Report, where he serves as a judge. We also delved into how important prevention is to ward off illness and dramatically enhance our overall quality of life. Dr. Katz’s thinking aligns with my own: It’s about making small, daily decisions—like eating nutritious foods, staying physically active, managing stress, and getting regular check-ups. These decisions, compounded over time, create a healthier, more vibrant life.
My other incredible guest was Jonathan Fisher, MD, FACC , the author of Just One Heart—one of the best books I’ve ever read. He spoke about how emotions impact your health. It may be surprising to some, but it’s true. Over the last decade, studies have been done on how heart health and emotions are intertwined. We also explored how mindset, gratitude, love, and spirituality are key to preventing cardiovascular disease.

Supporting Cardiovascular Health
Just last month, Midwest Spine & Brain Institute was one of the two main sponsors for the Making Compassion Count Gala because we are very committed to the mission of helping fund cardiovascular services that save lives.
It was amazing to see the community rally together to raise money for North Memorial Health’s Heart and Vascular program, which plays a vital role in delivering much-needed care, particularly to the uninsured and underserved in the Twin Cities. Cardiovascular disease is one of the country’s leading causes of death, but with the right care, it can be avoided. Every dollar raised will have a profound effect, helping to ensure that those who might otherwise be overlooked receive the care they need and deserve. It is a cause I care deeply about, and I think everyone who participated.
Grand Opening of Hypercharge Integrative Health Clinic ( Hypercharge Health )
We’re excited to invite you to celebrate the grand opening gala of our Hypercharge Integrative Health Clinic on October 24th at the Pinstripes event center in Edina, MN. This is our first full-service medical and aesthetic clinic providing a unique integrative approach for patients and complements our 3 HyperCharge Wellness clinics. At Hypercharge Health, we are committed to helping people improve their well-being by going well beyond what regular primary care clinics offer by taking a comprehensive functional approach to medicine and medical aesthetics.
We launched the Integrative model because we recognize that the healthcare system leaves many patients feeling frustrated and without clear answers, even after seeing multiple specialists. We believe in looking at the complete picture to give you an accurate diagnosis of your overall health based on history, extensive biomarker testing, and physical examination. With advanced testing we can tackle things like hormone deficiencies, adrenal fatigue syndrome, acute and chronic pain, chronic disease, sexual dysfunction, bone health, cognitive decline, and many other conditions, With the right tools, resources, and clinicians, we want to offer everything patients need to make a lasting impact on their health so they can live a vibrant and meaningful life. Our tagline is “Feel like yourself again”
One of the services we offer is an integrated aesthetic clinic. While aesthetics might not be the first speciality that comes to mind when picturing a holistic clinic, one of the reasons we introduced aesthetic services is because these services aren’t just cosmetic—they address the mental and emotional impact of body changes on your overall well-being. We will be offering $30,000 in free aesthetic treatment at our opening, so please RRSP and check out our website for more information about our new clinic.
I look forward to seeing you!

1 个月It is great that you are bringing forward the need for operating outside of the silos of healthcare. Many of us exercise physiologists and nutritionists have to stand along the sidelines and watch how doctors and other caregivers are focused on "fix it" and not "prevent it". Good luck with the opening and looking forward to reading the book.
